THE KINKS: Dedicated Follower Of Fashion. Original 1966 UK PROMO. PYE RECORDS 7N 17064
"They seek him here..."
Presented for auction is this genuine piece of British Pop History - an original 1966 test pressing promo copy of 'Dedicated Follower Of Fashion' by The Kinks. A collectors dream.
This would be one of a handful of demo copies pressed up by Pye Records in advance of the official release and distributed among music business insiders.
The record is in terrific condition considering it is now over fifty six years since it left the pressing plant as an advanced copy white label.
The condition is genuine, strong VG+, the vinyl still gleams and plays through perfectly without clicks crackle or skipping. There are minor scuffs and lines here and there but nothing serious at all. Playing it a moment ago I was struck with how full and ballsy those opening nine guitar strokes sound compared to the dozens of different formats this music has been presented on over the last half century. 60s vinyl was the real deal.
The labels are a distinctive promo black and white very different from the usual Pye pink labels of the period and on which DFOF was later to appear. The A side is clearly marked ADVANCE PROMOTION COPY and has the eventual catalogue number - 7N 17064 - added along with a stamped "25 FEB" in violet indicating the actual planned release date. The B side - the snotty groove of "Sittin' On My Sofa" - has the letter T thinly written in biro. This wonderful artefact is still in it's original PYE birth bag and, though free from rips and writing, is showing its age a little but after more than half a century why separate them now?
Written by Ray Davies following a fight with a fashion designer at a party, he wrote the arch and devastating lyrics in one furious session with no revisions. Nobody but Ray Davies was taking aim at 'Swinging London' like this at the time.
All in all this is a truly wonderful thing and is obviously a major addition to any collectors vinyl trove.

"Everywhere the Carnabetian army marches on..." And On and On. God Bless you, Ray!
Good luck with this everyone. The start is low and there is no reserve.
