This album was part of the "God Save The Kinks" promo set put out by Reprise Records in 1969. The promo with all contents is rarer then hen's teeth & fetches boo koo bucks whenever it's offered. Record sales had been plummeting up to & after their "Village Green" release since they were considered "uncool" to the public & to critics of the progressive rock revolution going on. How could The Kinks fit in the scene with the likes of Jimi Hendrix & The Doors? Hindsight shows they were all wrong at the time. Most of The Kinks greatest songs hold up today in a timeless fashion much more than a lot of their then contemporaries - a lot of them now considered as part of a distant time capsule.

"Then Now & Inbetween" is a compilation of tracks from 1964-1969. The very 1st track is an edited medley of 4 songs. Not bad but not necessary. The producers also edit "David Watts", "Sitting By The Riverside" & "Last of the Steam Powered Trains" into one minute or more segments as if trying to cram as much stuff on one album as possible. Unfortunately it dilutes the album as a whole from what could have been a great compilation to something good.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record. In this case, though, this is a rather moot point,  since this rare promo-only version of the album was never commercially released to begin with.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-        The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage (nothing significant)

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the top seam

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        Cover has all four corners slightly worn (nothing significant)
