THE KINKS: Waterloo Sunset/Act Nice And Gentle Original 1967 Pye Promo 45 7N 17321
"Terry meets Julie..."
Presented for auction is this genuine piece of British music history - an original 1967 PROMO copy of a disc many consider to be the greatest pop song ever made: The Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset".
Serious collectors will know how rare an opportunity this is. To have an original of this masterpiece is a beautiful thing. But to own one of the very first pressings ever to see the light of day is beyond rare and would surely be the centrepiece of any vinyl collector's library.
This very disc would have been one of a handful of early demonstration copies pressed up by Pye Records over fifty five years ago in advance of the song's official release and distributed strictly among music business insiders.
The record is in terrific condition considering it is now over half century since it left the pressing plant to be OK'd by the band and heard for the very first time by just a few DJ's and journalists.
The condition is a genuine VG+, it plays through perfectly, no repetitive clicks, a minimum of background crackle and positively no jumps or sticking. There are some minor scuff marks and a few light lines here and there but nothing serious at all. Playing it a moment ago I was struck with how full and gutsy that iconic descending opening sounds compared to the dozens of different formats this music has been presented on over the last half century. 60s vinyl was the real deal.
The labels are the distinctive PYE promo bright yellow and black, very different from the usual pink Pye labels of the period on which Waterloo Sunset was eventually presented to the general public. There are free from any writing, rips or stickers.
The A side is clearly marked ADVANCE PROMOTION COPY and has the catalogue number - 7N 17321 - along with a stamped "5 May 1967" indicating the intended release date.
This wonderful artefact is still in its original company birth bag and, though free from rips stickers and writing, is perhaps showing its age just a little - but after all these decades why separate them now?
Waterloo Sunset really is one of the cornerstones of 20th Century pop music and here it is in surely its earliest ever appearance.
Somebody out there now has the chance to own this historic disc, Ray Davies genius at its absolute peak. A major addition to any collectors vinyl vault.
