FAREWELL TO THE FIRST GOLDEN ERA (1967) was a huge hit and was a true Mamas and Papas greatest hits collection. It went gold and reached #5 at the end of 1967. In the summer of 1968, the group announced that they were breaking up. Their 4th studio album, THE PAPAS AND THE MAMAS had recently been released in May 1968. Dunhill Records lost it's biggest recording artists with the split of the group. The label chose to release another volume of hits only 4 months after THE PAPAS AND THE MAMAS album came out and was still on the charts. But the difference with this volume was that most of the album contained album tracks, and not that many big hits like the first volume. Also, the song selection seemed very random, even missing two of their singles during that period, DANCING BEAR and SAFE IN MY GARDEN, and strong album tracks like STRAIGHT SHOOTER and BOYS & GIRLS TOGETHER [ which would have been a great summer of '67 single ]. Among the 12 songs, only 4 are written by the group, with Dunhill choosing mostly songs that the group covered. The best thing about this album is that it included the non-LP single, GLAD TO BE UNHAPPY, which the group performed on the television special, " Rodgers and Hart Today ", and hit #26 in late 1967. However, Dunhill Records never did issue another Rodgers & Hart penned song , HERE IN MY ARMS that the group recorded . This would have been the perfect place to fit this rare track, or even release it as a single. Just as Dunhill was desperate to have Mamas and Papas releases still coming out, they totally neglected releasing HERE IN MY ARMS while they still would have had it available in their vaults. The master tapes ended up being thrown out by ABC Records , and the song would never see release until 38 years after it was recorded on the 2004 UK released only box set THE COMPLETE ANTHOLOGY, and then they had to use the audio from the TV special. What a blunder Dunhill. Instead they released DO YOU WANNA DANCE as the new single from this album, which was from their more than 2 year old first album. DREAM A LITTLE DREAM OF ME was the only real big hit on this volume, which was also on Cass Elliot's first solo album , released soon after GOLDEN ERA VOL. 2. Another choice for a new single would have been the great NOTHING'S TOO GOOD FOR MY LITTLE GIRL, beautifully sung by Denny with lovely backing chants by Cass & Michelle...from the still current last album. At least we did get some nice new photos on the cover and inside the new " unipac " gatefold cover. Dunhill , still eager for sales since their golden goose broke up continued with more Mamas and Papas collections. The hit packed 16 OF THEIR GREATEST HITS came out a year later in 1969, and was fortified with hits and strong sequencing. Then, A GATHERING OF FLOWERS followed several months later, then the HISTORIC PERFORMANCES AT THE MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL , and the final album PEOPLE LIKE US in late 1971. This album is a nice , but incomplete volume.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).
(b) The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)
(PLEASE NOTE: THE SHRINK WRAP HAS SEPARATED ALONG ABOUT 40% ON THE SPINE SIDE, BUT THE ALBUM IS STILL VISIBLY SEALED)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (nothing significant)
- Minor shelf wear noted on the spine (nothing significant)
- Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners
- Cover has one corner slightly dinged (BARELY VISIBLE)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
