Original 1980 UK release on Red Rhino (UK) (catalog # RED MEK 1).Mekons very rare 2nd LP. One of the very best post-punk records ever imho, criminally ignored these days.
Rate Your Music Reviews: a gem to treasure, an original with no equal or alternative, full score.Though the Mekons would become famous later on for delving into C&W (they're bloody English for Queen's sake!), only hints of that are apparent here, where they sound like Devo resurrected as drunken football hooligans, battering their cheap synths 'til blood spatters the studio walls, and in effect, yr precious ears. Those not immediately repulsed may notice that some of it is built on a base of rockabilly. Again, though, the Mekons were at this stage mutants instead of regular people. Just as we expect sports stars to be superhuman (as long as we don't know how they got that way), we expect our musical idols to be...different. As a great philosopher once noted: "...to feel the warm thrill of confusion that space cadet glows..."
Extremely art-damaged yet still an interesting listen. This band have long been championed by critics and I can hear why...they don't sound like anyone else, they don't fit into any neat little genre pigeonhole, and they exude real passion. It's basically punk rock minus the nihilism but with extra weirdness. The blend works.
