The Moonlighters Lida Rose & Dear Old Girl single-sided 33.3 RPM 10" METAL ACETATE single on Cleveland Recording Company (no matrix #). The members of this Barbershop Quartet noted on the record label are: George Black (Tenor), Jerry walker (Baritone), Bill Utley (Lead), and Gary Cook (Bass), although unfortunately, it doesn't note the name of the impressive female soloist on Lida Rose. I can't say whether this recording was ever released or not, but it has all the appearances of being a one-off style, private pressing. I did do a little web research, and it appears that there was/is a Barbershop quartet located near Cleveland, OH, but I can't say whether they are related to the quartet on this recording.
The vinyl on this acetate is in very good plays condition and plays solidly, but with some light scuffs/scratches/sleeve marks/noise hear and there, which doesn't effect the play, audio or enjoyment of this disc. There is NO whitening to the acetate surface, but there's a tiny chip to the outer edge of the ungrooved side, which is far away from the grooved area. I didn't attempt any physical cleaning on this fragile Acetate, for fear of damage. If you wish to physically clean it or even import it into your computer to edit it to make it sound pristine, I'll leave that up to you. You can hear sound samples of the side/song below, which is from the actual record in this auction, and you'll notice that I've given a few distinct samples from different sections of this acetate to give you an idea of condition, sound and mix. What is an acetate:
Runnin An acetate is a transitional stage between the master tape and the finished vinyl record.
Originally acetates were used for home recording in the days before tape recorders but since the advent of cassette tape & CDR are now no longer used for providing bands & their entourage copies of todays studio efforts. A machine actually cuts the grooves into the acetate like a lathe. The acetate is used to assess whether the music has been successfully transferred to disc.
It is checked by the sound engineer. There may be only one copy made of a particular recording sometimes more are cut and sent to the studio and band members for approval. The acetate comes before making the master and allows the sound to be checked without great expense.
It is unusual for more than a dozen to be manufactured so from the collectors point of view an acetate is a rare find indeed!
If the recording is rejected the acetate may be the only record that survives. The rejected cut may simply be poor quality however the artist may have opted to use a different take of the song if so the acetate becomes much more precious. An incredible find - possibly unique - and certainly one of only a handful.
