JUST AS GILES, GILES & FRIPP SET THE TONE FOR WHAT WAS TO COME FROM KING CRIMSON

I HAVE OWNED THIS RECORD FROM NEW WHEN I WAS JUST 12 YEARS OLD AND STARTING AT HAYWARDS HEATH GRAMMAR SCHOOL IN SUSSEX - WE USED TO BUY ALL OUR EARLY RECORDS (CREAM, HENDRIX, CHICKEN SHACK, FLEETWOOD MAC, SAVOY BROWN, TEN YEARS AFTER, JETHRO TULL, LED ZEPPELIN, ETC.) IN BRIGHTON AND, BEING SOMETHING OF A FANATIC, I OFTEN BOUGHT MONO AS WELL AS STEREO ISSUES.  I SAW THE STEREO RELEASE SOON AFTER (IN 1968) AND PLAYED THIS MONO ORIGINAL ONLY ONCE.  IT DIDN’T HAVE ENOUGH GUITAR FOR ME, WOW WHAT A MISTAKE, BECAUSE IT’S A REALLY BRILLIANT ALBUM.

HOWEVER, VERY SCARCE IN THIS VERY NEAR MINT CONDITION

SUPERB ORIGINAL PINK LABEL MONO FIRST PRESSING

ORIGINAL DEEP PINK PAPER LABELS, EMBOSSED AT THE SIDE TWO CENTRE

WITH THE ‘KT’ TAX CODE, ‘K’ and ‘T’

(ONE EACH SIDE OF THE SPINDLE, IN USE FROM JULY 1963 UNTIL THE EARLY 1970s)

WITH JET-BLACK LOGOS / LETTERING AND VERY EARLIEST TEXT:

VERY THICK, HEAVY PRESSING

CORRECT ORIGINAL PLAIN WHITE INNER SLEEVE

with ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ and ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ TEXT

(too early for the 1,125,555 patent number!)

THE LP HAS BEEN CAREFULLY STORED, AND OCCASIONALLY TRANSPORTED FROM THE UK TO AUSTRALIA (AND BACK A COUPLE OF TIMES), FOR WELL OVER 40 YEARS.  THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST FRAGILE AND EASILY MARKED SLEEVES I’VE ENCOUNTERED OVER THE YEARS, BEING MATT BLACK, QUITE PALE IN TONE, RELATIVELY THIN AND FINE, AND OF COURSE UNLAMINATED - CONSEQUENTLY THEY ALWAYS SHOW SOME SIGNS OF WEAR, NO MATTER HOW WELL PROTECTED AND STORED, BUT THIS IS EXCEPTIONAL AND DEFINITELY AS GOOD AS YOU WILL FIND (SEE FURTHER COMMENTS BELOW)

FINE DEBUT

the massive keyboard talents of Emerson already plainly evident

and some uniquely manic guitar from Davy O’List

while Lee Jackson and Brian Davison underpin with solid support

(both contribute timpani, noted on the rear sleeve as ‘tymps’)

solid British hard psych with early progressive moves

and the classical influences always heard from Keith

now 47 years old, the record is mint

SUPERB UK ORIGINAL - COVER CLOSE TO NEAR MINT

very thick, rigid, quality pressing with factory-fresh super high gloss

no scratches or hairlines

lovely mint condition - one play only

ultra bright, sharp, clear and clean labels are immaculate and as new

no wear to the spindle holes - completely perfect edges

original matt unlaminated sleeve

with great front cover photo by Gered Mankowitz

showing a cellophane-wrapped band

it is in close to near mint condition, as good as you will find

fantastic spine with original ½” (half inch) ‘pinched’ tapers

all lettering sharp and clear

the cover has only the most minimal rubbing and circular wear

predominantly to the rear

impossible to avoid on such a fragile and vulnerable matt black finish

rich and vibrant colour to the group photo and pastel lettering

some very minor shelf wear to the lower seam

top seam near perfect

absolutely razor-sharp opening edges

great corners with one or two of the very tiniest bumps

there is an insignificant small crease to the extreme lower front right

no splits, tears, writing, stickers, stamps, scuffs or stains

smells fresh and clean like new

original plain white paper inner sleeve in creamy white near mint condition

merely some minimal handling creases

correctly designated PATENT APPLIED FOR

(the December 1967 release date of this LP was considerably before the 1,125,555 patent number

for 12” paper inner sleeves was granted and applied)

a new anti-static poly inner will be added for extra protection
