The O’Jays’ Ship Ahoy, released in 1973 on Philadelphia International Records and distributed by CBS, is a soul album that boldly blends romance, funk, and political consciousness. Produced by the legendary Gamble and Huff, it was recorded at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia and mastered at Frankford/Wayne Recording Labs. The LP is housed in a gatefold sleeve featuring haunting artwork by James Barkley, depicting ghostly slave ships—a visual echo of the album’s central theme.

The album opens with “Put Your Hands Together,” a gospel-inspired call for unity and hope. It’s followed by the nearly ten-minute title track “Ship Ahoy,” a chilling sonic journey through the Middle Passage, complete with ambient sounds of waves and whips. “This Air I Breathe” offers a more introspective moment, while “You Got Your Hooks in Me” dives into the emotional entanglements of love.

Side B kicks off with “For the Love of Money,” a funk-driven critique of greed, anchored by Anthony Jackson’s iconic bassline. “Now That We Found Love” shifts gears into a joyful celebration of romance. “Don’t Call Me Brother” returns to social commentary, challenging hypocrisy and false solidarity. The album closes with “People Keep Tellin’ Me,” a soulful reflection on perseverance and self-belief.
