Description
Original 1960s self-titled LP by The Ones. This is on the Ashwood House label AH-1105, pressed in MONO. Stereo versions do not exist. The grading is as follows. Both sides have full gloss. The side 1 vinyl is a very strong VG+. The side 2 vinyl I am grading as good at best, with one light/non-feeler/visible scuff line; but mainly because it did skip repeatedly at the beginning of the side, during the first portion of the song “Didi-Wa-Didi,” when I played it again most recently. I do remember reading (in another person’s listing some years ago) that this might have been a pressing flaw because this record wasn’t manufactured on the highest-quality vinyl that was available even at the time. The remainder of the LP plays very smoothly and enjoyably throughout, with only a little very low-level surface noise present at the quietest passages; no bad clicks or pops at all. I played the entire LP with a regular Stanton 500-series stylus tracked at 2 grams. I had ever played this LP a couple times in the past (using the same exact setup) and it did not skip at all. Maybe it is just very tonearm and stylus-sensitive and needs extra tracking weight. I just don’t know. It also skipped when I attempted to record a sound sample of side 2 (my USB turntable tonearm is highly sensitive anyway, even if I so much breathe on it!). I am selling it as a FLAWED RECORD WITH SKIPS, so please be aware of this if you bid. Please don’t bid if this is going to upset you and you’ll just want to return it. The labels are very nice, with only a few spindle spindle swirls on each and one small smudge above the song titles on the side 2 label (see photos). The cover is VG+ and is among the best I’ve ever seen for this LP. The front looks great! The front cover is apparently very ringwear-sensitive, but this one shows practically none! Just a couple very light blotches in the upper-left corner. The back shows only the slightest hint of storage wear, but again, not too bad at all. There is just the slightest hint of a little storage-curling to the upper-right corner. No creases, no writing, no seam splits, no large stains, etc. A very solid and attractive cover overall.
If you are reading this description, you likely already know how rare this album is. It was a private pressing, recorded and released in mid-1966, and allegedly only between 500 and 1000 were made. How many of those even still exist is anyone's guess! In the time that I have owned this LP, I have seen less than a half-dozen others sell on Ebay and some of those were in pretty rough condition. This one has mostly survived the cruel hands of time in pretty reasonable shape. To my knowledge, this LP has never been reissued or reproduced in any format. This is arguably one of the most (if not the most) difficult 1960s New England garage albums to acquire. Although this group is widely regarded as a Boston Garage Band they were, in fact, from Connecticut and the LP was recorded in New York City! But, they made their name and developed a following by playing clubs in Boston!
Please review all of the photos included. A portion of "Hang On Sloopy” and “Maybe It’s Both of Us” (the only group original on the LP) can be heard by clicking on the player above. I have set what I believe is a very reasonable reserve price based on what I have seen others sell for in the past. I think most people would be happy just to say they have any copy of this in their collection!
