ARTIST & RELEASE INFO:
The Only Ones are an English rock band formed in London in 1976, whose original band members are Peter Perrett, Alan Mair, John Perry and Mike Kellie, they first disbanded in 1982. They were associated with punk rock, yet straddled the musical territory in between punk, power pop and hard rock, with noticeable influences from psychedelia.
The Only Ones reformed in 2007 after their biggest hit "Another Girl, Another Planet" experienced a resurgence of public interest. The band completed a comeback UK tour in June 2007, and continued touring throughout 2008 and 2009. New material was recorded in 2009 and played live, but has yet to be released.
History
The Only Ones were originally formed in August 1976 in South London by Peter Perrett. Perrett had been recording demos since 1972, and in late 1975 he was looking for a bass player. He was introduced to John Perry as a possible candidate, but Perry wanted to concentrate on playing guitar instead. By August 1976, Perry and Perrett had found drummer Mike Kellie (ex-Spooky Tooth) and bass guitarist Alan Mair, who previously had huge success with the Scottish band The Beatstalkers. Their first single, "Lovers of Today", self-released on the Vengeance record label, was immediately made "record of the week" by three of the four main music papers. A year later they signed to CBS. Their next single "Another Girl, Another Planet" became a popular and influential song, and remains the band's best-known song. It is often featured on various musical box-sets featuring a punk rock or new wave theme. After its inclusion on the 1991 compilation album The Sound of the Suburbs, it was re-released as a single and reached no. 57 in the UK singles chart.
The band released their debut studio album The Only Ones in 1978, which was well received by both reviewers and fans. The band's follow-up album, Even Serpents Shine, was released the following year. A year later, they released their final studio album, Baby's Got a Gun. In the summer of 1980, they supported the Who on their tour of the United States, and in 1982 the band officially disbanded. In subsequent years, the Only Ones retained a following and their posthumously released records – live performances, BBC Television and radio shows, and compilation albums – now outnumber their studio albums. Unusually, The Only Ones' discs were never deleted from the CBS catalogue and remain in-print.
"Another Girl, Another Planet" is the most successful song by the English rock band The Only Ones, whose members are Peter Perrett, Alan Mair, John Perry and Mike Kellie. It is the second track on their first album, The Only Ones, released in 1978. The song has since been covered by several other performers.
Recording
It was recorded on a 16-track analogue Studer tape machine and an ex-Steve Marriott Helios mixing console at Escape Studios, a residential facility in Egerton, Kent, England, by engineer/producer John Burns, assisted by Ian (now, Jennifer) Maidman, and later worked on and mixed at Basing Street Studios by Robert Ash.
Chart performance
The track was not a chart hit upon its initial release in 1978. Its first chart appearance was 7th June 1981 – at No. 44, for one week, on the New Zealand chart. It was re-released in the UK in January 1992, backed with "Pretty in Pink" by The Psychedelic Furs to promote the compilation album, Sound of the Suburbs, and appeared in the UK Singles Chart for two weeks, peaking at No. 57.
Recognition
AllMusic describes it as "Arguably, the greatest rock single ever recorded".
The song was placed at number 18 in John Peel's all-time Festive Fifty millennium edition. Playing it in 1980's Festive Fifty, he introduced it as an "artful little caprice".
In March 2005, Q magazine placed the song at number 83 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.
"A fantastic song with an amazing guitar line," enthused Tim Wheeler of Ash. "It took me a long time to figure out that it's about drugs – not a girl from another planet – and that space travel is a metaphor for being high. It was Peter Perrett's heroin-heavy drawl that eventually gave it away."In an interview in 2015 Perrett declared that the song has been actually inspired by a girl and that it is not about heroin, nevertheless admitting that he always enjoyed "writing ambiguous lyrics that could be taken on two or three different levels".
In popular culture
The song's title was used as the name of a 1992 American independent movie directed by Michael Almereyda, though the song does not appear in the film. It does appear, though, in five films and their soundtracks: That Summer! (1979), Different for Girls (1996), Me Without You (2001), D.E.B.S. (2004) and Paul (2011).
