THE PREACHERS – STAY OUT OF MY WORLD / PAIN AND SORROW (MOONGLOW M-5006) (PROMO) (VG++)

Yet another band from Los Angeles CA, The Preachers formed in 1964 and became a staple in LA clubs opening for the Byrds, Seeds and Leaves circa 65/66 during their short career.  Their first single on Moonglow Records was the full blown garage classic, Who Do You Love. It got enough national airplay for them to be invited to perform the song on the ABC Shivaree TV show in May of 1965. But the performance was pretty unorthodox for National TV! A raucous band of longhairs all shaking their heads like AC/DC with their eyeballs popping out of their heads was a bit too much, and led to Moonglow insisting on the removal of lead vocalist Rich Fortunato.  The band never quite recovered from that gut-punch but brought on Burk Reynolds to take the lead vocal slot for their next two singles. This, their third single, is actually an excellent garage folk rave-up and Reynolds was obviously well-schooled in snotty vocal techniques. Stay out of My World is an excellent folk garage tune and the “rave-up” portion comes from a torrid guitar break from Hal Tennant and a unique double-tracked harmonica blitz.  Pain and Sorrow is a much slower folk ballad, but is also thoroughly enjoyable.  Both sides of this 45 were co-written by John English, and after this single, the band decided to drop Reynolds as vocalist and replaced him with English for their fourth (and last) single in 1966 as John English III and the Lemondrops.  This promo copy is in decent shape, graded VG+. Stay out of My World plays as EX-, but Pain and Sorrow has some minor audible surface noise.  Check out the scans and audio samples.

Hi folks, this is Velvetfogg, founder of the U-SPACES music collective which ran from 1997 to 2020 on Yahoogroups and has now switched over to Facebook.  The primary focus of U-SPACES was to provide a network of Psych & Garage music aficionados to build and share compilations of non comped songs. Over the past 40 years I have amassed a large 45 & LP collection which I am now choosing to put up for auction to help fund my kid’s college educations.  Generally speaking, I am only putting things up for auction that are either in excellent condition or extremely rare.

My preference is to run these auctions on EBAY because of familiarity with the process, but there is the potential that I will switch or use other platforms in parallel in the future.  Check out my collection on DISCOGS under VELVETFOGG. I have only listed 45’s on that site that I plan to auction in 2021/22 and the list will grow substantially on a weekly basis as I continue to go through my collection. I hope to list 10 records per week for EBAY auctions on Sundays.

GRADING SCALE:

NM/M: Played once or twice. No visible surface or playback wear.

EX: Has been played but has no scratches, minimal to no wear and plays without surface noise.

EX- Plays without surface noise, but might have a few visible minor scratches.

VG++: May have a few surface scratches or a little wear, but plays nicely with only minimal surface noise and clicks. No Skips

VG+: "Typical used record".  A little wear, a few minor (light) scratches, but plays well. Surface noise may be more present during soft passages. No Skips

VG: More wear and significant surface noise. Deeper scratches. May have a skip and will be noted.

G: Significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. (Beat up record!) May have skips if noted.
