Description

THE REINER SOUND Fritz Reiner Conducts The Chicago Symphony Orchestra New & Sealed One Sided, 5 Disc Pressing - 45 RPM Series Quiex SV-P 200 Gram
Record label/brand: Classic Records/RCA Victor LSC-2183 upc/mpn: None Living Stereo - "Shaded Dog"
This is a very collectable audiophile rarity issued by Classic Records. There are 5 heavy vinyl, one-sided records in this set. Mastered by audio legend, Bernie Grundman, this was Classic Records' attempt to achieve the ultimate in vinyl sound quality.
The records are packaged in one sleeve with the original album artwork and then three white generic covers. Classic Records pride themselves for releasing each album with the original artwork, LP labels and any other materials which were included with original pressings. Corners are sharp but bottom left corner (spine) is bent slightly backward. That is the only flaw, otherwise set is completely mint.
This title was mastered by Classic Records at Half Speed from the original source master tapes. An all-analog, tube amplification process was used at every step. Classic Records used a proprietary vinyl, in either 180 gram or 200 gram weight, that guaranteed virtually no surface noise and sonically superior dynamics.
In short, this is as good as this album is ever going to sound on vinyl. Don't wait... this four record set is long out of print and growing harder to find - especially in this brand new, still sealed condition.
Review: For those of you who think Rachmaninoff is a superficial composer, this is the record for you. Reiner's Isle of the Dead spoils you for any other - listening to another performance you can't help but begin thinking how it falls short. Long before Georg Solti, Reiner whipped the Chicago Symphony - often, apparently, through sheer terror - into an orchestra that was second to none, with many of its most phenomenal performances documented by RCA in recordings whose sound, even though they date back the dawn of the stereo age, surpasses most CD's issued today. From its opening measures, Reiner's performance of Isle of the Dead grabs you by the throat and never lets go.
