Label Conditions: Both immaculate: very clean, fresh and attractive with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. Quite an unusual sight on this record that was so often played into submission – this beauty plays beautifully and that is never easy.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 126 grams. A more typical weight for a slightly later pressing.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: This album sold well and even unboxed stereo copies are not that hard to find. However, complete examples that have been played little are a far different matter. Issued in 1969, the unboxed format was soon to be changed to the boxed label design, so this is still quite an early example. It has a clean cover but did not then include the sticker. It does have the inner and a beautiful pristine Mint unmounted poster. Even with all the positives included, the most important factor as far as I am concerned, is the sound quality, which is fantastic. As I have said before: slightly later copies were less likely to have been ruined on more basic heavy-tracking record players and avoiding the Dansette era. This gem looks hardly played and sounds fantastic throughout.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Although not a very first issue, it is always a real pleasure offering a very clean boxed label copy with a nice, little worn cover, inner and ultra clean, unmounted poster. One of the greatest albums ever made by one of the world’s major acts - a truly essential album to any serious vinyl collector. By the end of the greatest decade in popular music, the stereo mode had largely replaced the ageing mono format and of course, this a true stereo record. The last Rolling Stones album to feature the presence of the band’s creator, Brian Jones. It was a brilliant culmination of all their musical influences throughout music’s greatest decade. The power of the opening track, ‘Gimme Shelter’, will haunt many forever with the memory of the Altamont murder, Jagger’s top hat and scarf and the death of the 60s. The repeated line, ‘It’s just a shot away’, complements the repetition of the naively profound lyric of the album’s last track: ‘You can’t always get what you want’. The filling in-between, like the layered cake on the cover, is equally delectable. This early 70s copy on offer is complete and all parts in very fine condition. All the individual parts are graded and described below.

Cover Condition and Details: VERY NEAR EXCELLENT: and this hardly does this lovely old cover justice – this is nice. A single format, the front is laminated with Clarifoil. This covers all the closed edges and ends on the smooth back via the spine edge. It still has the peep hole on back to identify mono or stereo copy from the colour coded inner – mono being red, stereo blue – this is of course blue. It was printed in England by Upton Printing Group and has the UK Patents Applications No 43212/68 number. One of most famous covers ever produced and this does it fine justice.

Cover Lamination and Front: Firstly, can I make this clear, this cover is made from fairly thin and delicate card making this sleeve very vulnerable to most forms of wear. This front retains solid, shiny and clear laminate that has a few small press marks near the top just below the small drum on top of the cake. The likely culprit – yes – the ‘Sticky Fingers’ zip that has a lot to answer for for many vintage covers. Any press marks are few and light and only really shows under angled light. The same goes for any dulling which is little and light also. There is no laminate lifting and any of the few creases are light as mainly fine edge types that few will ever avoid totally. Generally clean and still quite fresh looking, this slightly later one has no sticker. That lovely old Delia Smith made cake still looks very impressive indeed.

Cover Back: Not laminated but still looking generally clean and attractive. Any creases or rubbing light, few and faint with minimal rim impression and barely any hint of real ring wear. The peep-hole neat and the colour strong, a light fade line near the laminate end on the spine where it has very slightly contracted which most laminate does over time – Clarifoil arguably the biggest culprit. A few fairly light press marks near the top again, these longer but fine with minimal visibility. Overall, a very fine back to complement the splendid front. Not for the perfectionists, but many collectors will be pleased.

Top Edge: One tiny chip near the right corner, little else and still quite straight.

Bottom Edge: A little thickening to the back panel end, all quite natural from storage on this vulnerable edge. The actual laminated fold has not worn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp with a little thickening seen viewed end-on. Minimal traces of burring and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: Almost wear-free, very solid and straight with any compression light. All text is perfect and unworn under the very solid and uncracked laminate (and even this is shiny), also very well centred on a narrow depth – this spine is quite thin. This early cover has both mono and stereo numbers on it’s spinet.

Corners: Light tip rubs and odd gentle tip crease, fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: In terms of classic vintage covers, this is one of the classics. This has a few light blemishes, but nothing remotely serious. So on that basis, it should please many collectors, but I state again, not for the highly discerning perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: or very close to. Made with very thin paper it is unlined and is way under-strength for practicality and longevity, but this is very clean and neat and few traces of ageing. It has one moderate corner crease, any others few and light, and something against the odds, NO edge splits or repairs. This oine has the black overprint on the ‘London Bach Choir’ text that was objected too and covered up. General wear has been avoided and this thin inner is often seen with deep ringwear, but none is evident here. These were not lined and given all the facts with so many seen ripped, torn and split, this is a near exceptional example.

The Poster : Practically MINT: quite honestly, this looks unhandled and has probably not seen light-of-day for decades. Ultra fresh and gorgeously attractive, printed on one side only and on thin paper, no wonder so few survive like this. This has just two manufactured folds, no splits or weakening on them and no creasing or ruffling at all, this lies dead flat with no curl or bending. It is also folded perfectly square too as can be seen folded up. As fresh and clean as manufacture day, this has the very slightly silk sheen finish – the very first ones were matt – so this is the correct one for this early 1970s copy. Importantly, this is unmounted with no tape or pin-hole damage and the back is ultra clean as well. A much better one will prove close to impossible to find – remember many were wall-mounted, torn down, damaged or even discarded altogether. Later copies did even include it at all.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, ultra light and faint as seen critically up close under bright angled light. NO penetrating marks here and this still had the potential to be played on heavy-tracking old record players of the time – which this clearly has avoided. Few of these will ever survive over 40 years without a small few blemishes, but his largely escaped. Merely whispy surface traces or ultra faint hairlines, but look hard. No heavy arm drops or jolts have spoilt what is an impressive copy and tracking is effortless, easy and precise. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic record plays even above it’s very clean visual grading with barely anything to fault. This has strong sound with no pressing noises or distortions. Sound quality remains impressive with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound and the stereo mix presents the music beautifully. Any surface sounds are bordering on minuscule and this on an album with some quiet and delicate passages. The sound still very sharp and fully focused and the lack of pops and clicks always the most welcome news. So many examples subjected to heavy needle abuse, badly marked and totally worn out. This copy has avoided such traumas and even on very revealing equipment, offers quality sound that should please most-all fans and collectors. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am quite certain this record has played lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, the odd very gentle reminder it is a record being played and not a squeaky clean digital version, but very few indeed. This copy will prove difficult to find better and is highly recommended. With originals commanding vast prices, this boxed copy is hardly a compromise, it’s perfect good sense for those who simply want to hear an early copy via the original analogue source. A very fine all-round example.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
