FIRST AND LIMITED U.S. RELEASE OF UNDUN BY THE ROOTS ON DEF JAM IN 2018
The album, which is The Roots’ tenth, has never been available for purchase on vinyl in the United States. Originally released on CD and digital only in 2011, Def Jam pressed an extremely limited run of “Undun” on vinyl in December 2018. The Roots’ melancholy classic was only available on vinyl for a very brief time before selling out everywhere. It has not been reissued again. This LP is from that original vinyl release.
If you have never heard the album before, where have you been? “Undun” is a dense, mournful project that tells the story of a young man born in poverty: Redford Stevens. The album displays some of the most experimental music of The Roots’ career, inspired by the work of indie rock musician Sufjan Stevens and acting as an allegory for the brief life and murder of Trayvon Martin, whose photo adorns the album‘s back cover. In addition to Questlove, Black Thought, and the Legendary Roots Crew, “Undun” features appearances from Bilal, Phonte, Big K.R.I.T., Dice Raw, and Greg Porn.
