THE SAME - I’m A Face b/w 1918 45
Incredibly obscure and rare Canadian-only 45 by this virtually unknown UK punk band; mod affiliations suggested by the song titles, inclusion on the “Uppers on the South Downs” comp LP and the fact that this was pressed by the tiny label that also licensed the Teenbeats “I Can’t Control Myself” 45, are defied by the sound of this record-- assaultive, energetic punk rock that sidesteps the usual Clash/Pistolisms of their late ‘70s contemporaries for a more abrasive, less predictable attack. Can’t think of anyone I would specifically say this sounds like, but it would definitely appeal to fans of early Fall, Swell Maps, Homosexuals, early Devo, Subway Sect, the first PIL records and so on. Released on Gamma, but there's no indication that there was ever a UK pressing and this is the first and only copy I've seen in 25 years of collecting punk records in Canada, which makes me think it was actually released only as a promo for their licensed press of the "Uppers on..." compilation LP, which was confusingly titled "I Can't Control Myself" in Canada (a title shared with Teenbeats 45 also licensed on the label...yes, an enigmatic obscurity indeed). Condition is very nice, although the b-side label is slightly folded back on itself-- a very minor flaw that obviously doesn’t affect the record whatsoever-- and no picture sleeve was issued.
