Description
Thrift Store Discovery! Up for auction is an acetate of unreleased vintage Rock Music!
The artist is THE SHADES with the songs "All Day Long" and "Talkin Guitar"
Is this the pre-Velvet Underground Lou Reed group "The Shades"? I have "The Jades" single, and the songs on this acetate do not sound that similar to the songs on that single, however the argument could be made that they are in the same stylistic vein and the guitar on the instrumental track "talkin guitar" (excerpted in the video below) could be considered similar to Reed's pre-VU guitar work. The sound on this 78 is less polished than the "Jades" single, but the instrumentation matches and, like "The Jades" what you have here is clearly a white group influenced by R&B.
The fact is there were at least one if not more groups operating at the time using the name "The Shades", hence Reed's group renaming themselves "The Jades".
I welcome any information on this group and will post it to this auction whether it confirms Reed's involvement or not. Even if Reed is not involved in this "The Shades", the record is still a really cool unreleased gem.
This is an impossibly rare item and as winning bidder you will possess a previously undiscovered, yet important, piece of music history.
I have not attempted a hardcore cleaning or restoration this piece, as I believe the buyer of this item will have their own idea of the best way to preserve this item. The sound has clearly suffered from poor storage of the disc over the years. I have used a light dilution of ammonia (professional archivist recommended) to remove the layer of palmitic acid that was covering the disc. I believe this disc can be cleaned/restored further.
I usually grade every record I sell, but in this case I think it best to describe the record and include sound clips of both tracks. The video contains the track, with the end of the tracks truncated. Bear in mind, a dedicated restoration of this acetate will bring out a far better sound than what is on this recording. The acetate has clearly seen better days and has some shelf wear. I believe the sound quality can be treated in restoration, but again I leave that to the expertise of the buyer. There is no chipping or flaking to the emulsion on this acetate. Sound is clearly compromised, but again I believe proper restoration can bring this out more. Please contact if you have any information on who this artist is!!!

Shipping note: Due to numerous postal problems I no longer ship to Italy or Brazil.
Addendum concerning overseas shipping since this is my most commonly asked question: The shipping price is as stated by ebay's shipping calculator on the auction page. Many overseas buyers are unaware that The United States Postal Service raised rates in January. Rates are significantly higher than they were last year. The cost is calculated by weight, which includes the sturdy heavy box and filler inserts I use to guarantee a safe trip overseas. The weight of the packaging unfortunately bumps the item into the higher cost of shipping bracket. The USPS no longer has a sea-mail shipping auction. The cost quoted is for standard airmail delivery and is actually the cheapest method available
