In the planets that revolve around planet punk The Shapes are definitely far out there along with planet Pluto. Fellow travellers would include the TV Personalities, Swell Maps and later on The Sconeheads and a whole host of indies. An antidote to the gothic splendour of Siouxsie, the intensity of The Clash, the rebellion of the Pistols and the growl of a thousand other punk bands. Basically the Shapes made music that you could jump to and at the same time make you smile and they played it in the places like The Vortex and The Roxy and they played it with bands such as The Killjoys, The Saints and The Cure.
The Shapes were undeniably English and also the masters of parenthesis. In the white hot anger of '78 they gave us 'Wots for lunch mum? (not beans again!)' and '(I saw) Batman (in The Launderette)'. It's not yer 1234 punk more but a sound more akin to ATV but with humour. Never ones to take themselves seriously, one of their last recordings was 'Jennifer Connifer' but that doesn't excuse naming a song Leamington (after Leamington Spa). If they don't make you smile then something's missing.
In their own words:
After a little rehearsal, we return to Woodbine Mobile Recording Studios and record what is to become the Part Of The Furniture EP on our own label Sofa Records. We record four songs, (I Saw) Batman (In The Launderette), College Girls, What's For Lunch Mum (Not Beans Again), and Chatterbox. The versions are faster and more urgent with two guitarists and we retire well pleased by the whole affair. Our money is duly spent on pressing and sleeve inserts and we dutifully spend an evening stuffing the inserts into the records. That took us up to the point that we knew, so after persuading everyone we knew to buy one, we sent one to just about every DJ at every radio station we could think of. We never really expected anyone would play it, especially not John Peel, because we had played a road show of his not long previously and had quite frankly gone down like a fart in a space suit. But play it he did, not once, not twice, but incessantly. The phone started to ring and suddenly we were a hot property. We couldn't get rid of the records fast enough. We would drive to London and starting at Westbourne Grove, start unloading them at Virgin, Rough Trade, Fresh, Cherry Red, and all the way up to Small Wonder in Walthamstow to hawk them to the lovely Pete Stennet and his even lovelier wife Marie. A cup of tea would be cadged and then off home again. The week would see trips to all the other major distributors, Red Rhino, Dead Good, and a host of others. Suddenly, places that wouldn't let us in were calling us, and the gigging never stopped. We started scoring supports all over, and so began the never ending swathe of gigs that became the Part Of The Furniture tour of 1979.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT COMBINED SHIPPING ON ALL 12" VINYL / LPS / 12" EPS / 12" SINGLES - PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY!!!!
We offer combined shipping on all LPs / 12" Vinyls: our shipping rates are listed above. HOWEVER shipping packages that weigh more than 2kg is VERY expensive. Therefore we can only offer combined shipping up to a maximum of SIX (6) LPs / 12" vinyls. Any extra purchases will be invoiced, packaged and shipped separately.
***Due to the physical logistics of how I can package orders, I will not combine box sets with other items, I will only package them individually***
---------------------------------------------------
COMBINED POSTAGE FOR DIFFERENT FORMATS will be invoiced at my discretion:
While I am happy to combine (for example) one or two 7” singles into one package with 12” records, sometimes it simply isn’t practical (like if you want me to combine one 12” record with three or more 7” records). I simply do not think that these combinations can be packaged together safely and securely. Therefore these will be invoiced separately as two packages.
IF YOU ARE UNSURE, please contact me before bidding!
---------------------------------------------------
Sorry but I am no longer willing to carry combined transactions beyond two weeks of auctions (see below).
---------------------------------------------------
PAYMENT
I would appreciate payment within seven days of the auction’s end. If you want to bid on more of my auctions ending a week later please inform me. I will wait and issue a combined invoice at the close of the second week’s auctions.
However, I am no longer willing to carry combined transactions beyond two weeks and in these cases would appreciate payment promptly after the close of the second week’s auctions.
I am sorry to have to introduce these measures – I always try to be patient and allow buyers to bid on extra auctions and / or delay payment. Unfortunately some buyers have been stretching out transactions to unacceptable lengths so I feel I have no option but to limit ‘carried over’ transactions to two weeks.
