BLACK AND WHITE, originally released in May 1978, was THE STRANGLERS’ third album. Incredibly, it came barely a year after the release of debut RATTUS NORVEGICUS. In that remarkably short but extraordinarily fertile time, the band’s sound had evolved to the point where BLACK AND WHITE is now considered by many critics to be the first post-punk album and the one that paved the way for the likes of Joy Division, Killing Joke, Bauhaus, Echo & The Bunnymen, Tubeway Army, Simple Minds, U2 and many, many more…

BLACK AND WHITE, crashed into the UK charts at #2 and, like RATTUS and NO MORE HEROES before it, was soon certified Gold in many countries around the globe. This only further enhanced THE STRANGLERS’ growing reputation as being musically and commercially the most successful band to emerge from the Punk/New Wave “explosion”.

Fast-forward to 2016 and it is already shaping up to be another busy and successful year for THE STRANGLERS. It all kicks off on 3rd March with the 18 date UK BLACK & WHITE TOUR, when the band will be playing BLACK AND WHITE in its entirety for the very first time.

To coincide, a very special re-mastered, numbered, 180g heavyweight, 2LP vinyl edition limited to 1000 only is being released. The first vinyl is the album in its original sequence. The bonus LP, on white vinyl, comprises assorted tracks from the original, associated single releases. WALK ON BY was placed 3rd in a 2014 public vote organised by the BBC to find Britain’s favourite cover versions. It was originally given away free as a white vinyl 7” with the first 100,000(!) copies of the LP, where it was backed by MEAN TO ME & the infamous live recording of TITS from the Front Row Festival, Islington, in November 1977. WALK ON BY was later released as a stand-alone single when, despite the number already given away, it still made UK #21. The B-sides to that version included OLD CODGER. A song the band wrote for jazz legend and bon viveur GEORGE MELLY to sing, it led to one critic citing the THE STRANGLERS as “the Dadaists of punk”. The explosive SHUT UP was the B-side of NICE ‘N SLEAZY. SVERIGE is SWEDEN sung in Swedish and was originally released only in Scandinavia. Last but no means least is SOCIAL SECS, aka, in Stranglers’ legend, WASTING TIME. It recalls the band’s infamous appearance and subsequent non-appearance at Guildford University in November 1978 for BBC tv’s Rock Goes To College programme. It has never been fully released commercially before.

A reproduction of the original instore promotional poster is also included.

The whole package comes in a wide-spined sleeve and both LPs run at 33? RPM.

This is number 960 out of 1000 copies, please note this set is now sold out !!!!.  The vinyl is new and unplayed, however the inner sleeves have some ringwear due to the weight of the records, plus there is a small nic to the black sleeve again due to the vinyl plus the white cover has some slight surface scuffing at the top - please see pictures, this is how I received it when bought new, if you are not happy with anything please email me.
