THE TERMITES
Do The Rock Steady
STUDIO ONE SOL9003
RELISTED HAVING SOLD (and refunded) £900+
I’m relisting this partly to ensure that it is not recorded for future valuations as having sold at the previous amount.
I think I got excited by the valuation before I listed it and missed some things. In no way was I aiming to deceive- the buyer understands that.
The buyer returned it stating that:
- it is a U.K. pressing with original matrix stamped in it
- the vinyl may have been a blank and had well-photocopied labels stuck on
- the sleeve is a reissue sleeve (this was pointed out to me shortly before the auction ended so I added a note saying no flip backs) and the buyer thinks this was laminated by the person who did the labels
If you google it, you will notice a lengthy Facebook discussion (sadly not shared with me - I found it after being shocked at my mistake in not spotting this stuff) that discussed the following:
- the sleeve may be a hybrid laminated 1980s reissue paired with original back (but is one sheet of card folded)
- record looks like UK original with UK stampers but pressing rings indicate US pressing, probably 1980s
- the pressing ring may be Wide Band Grooved like Decca, label looks correct not stuck on as this would be very hard to do
- Coxson may have gone to Brentford Road in 1980s and brought back stampers, labels, sleeves to US
- matrix is machine stamped and there are 12 tunes on vinyl not 11, which are indicative of original
- others insist it is a fake
The labels have possibly had an attempt to peel them back before I listed this item, there is slight edge damage which may be a finger nail. I have gently lifted what has already been done but can’t specifically see another label underneath. There is possible glue remnant on the label edges but nothing I haven’t seen before.
The sleeve is a single sheet of card. It has square cut edges stuck under the back, not flip backs. The lamination is only on the front and is very square - initially I thought it indicated a photocopy front but the printing from the front rolls on to the spine. There’s some pencil writing inside which might mean something.
I have taken extra photos to assist.
Unusually there are no notes from Michael on this. I pretty sure he’ll have chatted to someone out there about it if he felt it was a fake or to check through what it might be. Unfortunately that knowledge isn’t automatically downloaded to a partner when someone passes away, so I think it’s worth putting this out there again in case anyone can recognise it for what it is.
If I’m given conclusive evidence that it’s a fake I will end the auction and destroy it.
CONDITION EX(-)
Vinyl is bright and clean with a light marks on A5 and B5 and a few very light hairlines. Plays well - some tracks are a slightly muffled press, A5 is quite loud - no skips or jumps. Labels are bright with writing. Matrix stamped. Sleeve is intact, flat and clean, lightly aged. See photos.

*** GRADING ***
I grade visually under a daylight lamp so my grading may be harsher than some and I listen to samples of the record through headphones, picking up light background crackles that may not be obvious through speakers. I use an excellent vintage DJ turntable and stylus and a slight weight on the arm.
My gradings are from M-Mint to G-Good. I rarely grade M unless the item is sealed.
*** COMBINED POSTAGE ***
I invoice on Monday evenings and will combine postage for multiple items. If you’d like to pay sooner, just request an invoice and I will alter the postage costs for you.
NOTE: I am having a few random technical issues that are preventing me from combining invoices in some cases.
***POSTAGE AND PACKING***
Please pay within 3 days of the end of the auction or let me know if you are bidding on another item.
I aim to send your item to you within 3 working days of payment. Sometimes circumstances prevent this, but I will try to let you know.
Ebay Simple Postage tends to dictate postage costs nowadays. If I have a choice I use Tracked or International Tracked and Signed. I don’t send items without tracking.
I use professional packaging and board stiffeners for protection. I separate disc from cover for LPs/picture sleeves. I tape your item up well to avoid split seams on packaging so please open your package with extreme care.
*** RETURNS ***
Please do read the full description, including grading notes. If I have missed anything or not accurately described an item, please do get in touch with me.
I do not do partial refunds for new customers. I offer a full refund after discussion and upon return of the item, if unhappy.
***CUSTOMS CHARGES***
I have to enter the value of the item when buying postage, for tracking and insurance purposes. This value automatically transfers to the customs declaration. Please consider customs charges prior to bidding.
