RARE US first pressing of The United States Of America`s eponymously-titled debut album "The United States Of America" on Columbia Records (March 1968).
"Equipped with Byrd's own keyboard work, a female vocalist, an electric violin, fretless electric bass, drums, and tape machine (Look Ma, No Guitar!) the U.S.A. plays a challengingly complex brand of art-rock. (...) Some of these electronic and semi electronic sounds are very beautiful and even emotional; those at the very end of the record especially so. Others are pure gimmickry. But what I find most satisfying about the U.S.A.'s music is the song material. The tunes are infectious, the harmonies adventurous yet eminently satisfying. And the lyrics (which Columbia has wisely printed on the jacket) are the best thing of all. America is told where it's at, uncompromisingly but without viciousness. (...) Obviously the U.S.A. is mainly into idea-rock. And the ideas are fantastic, but without interpretive power to match, the resulting music is cold and cerebral. Like so much 20th-century classical music. GRADING:
EX+ COVER with slightest all-round wear. Please see photos for details.
- Tiny hole through the cover (at top center).
- Slight fraying along the spine.
- Minor corner wear at bottom only.
- Also includes the original CBS plastic inner sleeve in undamaged condition.
MINT(-) RECORD in practically perfect condition. Comes from my own (meticulously looked-after) record collection.
- Near-perfect vinyl on both sides, with impeccable audio reproduction.
- No hairlines, scuffs, scratches or other visible signs of previous play at all.
- Original first-pressing Columbia Records "360° Sound" labels with no spindle wear whatsoever.
- The matrix stamps in the run-off grooves read "SXM 135627 - 1A" and "SXM 135628 - 1B".
- Mothers/Stampers: "1 3 / A G" on Side One and "1 / O" on Side Two.
- This copy of "The United States Of America" is fully certified to be an original US first pressing, released in March 1968.
