Description

You are bidding on an original 1960s press of the classic 1967 album The Velvet Underground & Nico.

This has the third generation sleeve with the torso airbrushed out on the back. It is a stereo East Coast pressing. The matrix numbers in the runout are V6-5008 SIDE-1 MGS-558 REV and V6-5008 SIDE-2 MGS-559-RE-1 which dates it as a 1968 press.

The classic Andy Warhol designed sleeve is in superb condition. The banana is unpeeled and completely intact. A previous owner has attempted to 'peel slowly and see' before resticking down the banana. There is a tear to the top and a small one about a third of the way down. The photos show these. There is a two millimetre split to the top of the front side of the gatefold sleeve. It is virtually unnoticeable, but I prefer to be totally honest with my descriptions. There is a little bit of bump damage to the bottom left corner of the sleeve. There are two pinprick holes to the top right of the front of the sleeve. Otherwise the sleeve is absolutely perfect. The spine is strong and square. There is no ringwear. The sleeve is very clean, with just a little age related discolouring. It is one of the best 1960s copies of this sleeve you will find. Overall I would grade it as Excellent.

The vinyl is visually graded as Mint Minus. It retains its original glossy sheen and is unmarked.

I have played the record on a high quality turntable and would grade the sound as Excellent. There are no skips or jumps and virtually no surface noise. Femme Fatale and Black Angel's Death Song have a few faint pops, but they are only noticeable when the record is really turned up loud.

The blue Verve Records labels are graded as Mint Minus. There are no spindle marks and they are very clean.

The record comes with the original Verve inner sleeve which is in Very Good Plus condition. It has a one inch split to the bottom and some light creasing.

This is probably one of the best 1968 stereo pressings around.

The 1968 pressings of The Velvet Underground & Nico are actually rarer than the 1967 ones. The record had reached the dizzy heights of number 171 in December 1967 and had spent a total of 13 weeks in the top 200. Its last week in the charts was January 6th 1968. The 1968 pressings of the record never troubled the charts as the original Andy Warhol related hype had died down by this point.

The photos are of the actual record that you are bidding on.

Please check out my other auctions as I am listing first and early pressings of all five Velvet Underground studio albums and Live At Max's Kansas City.

The record will be send in a very strong mailer and will be very well protected.
