Great UK '77 Punk / Powerpop band.
Its fair to say that The Wasps were a slight cut above the run of the mill punk bands and their story involves all the twists and turns that seem to come with rock'n'roll including management squabbles, legal writs, major record labels and so on.
Originally formed in February 1976 The Wasps were, according to Steve Wollaston, a punk band ahead of their time into The Stooges and Velvet Underground. However despite this as late as the middle of 1977 The Wasps were motoring on like a hundred other London bands playing The Roxy and Vortex and releasing an independent single to mild acclaim. It was punk but it had a certain original style and power and they had in their set fine songs.
Losing their original guitarist Del May, who thought punk would get nowhere, they replaced him with the 16 year old Gary Wellman who was their soundman and released the classic Teenage Treats single. However following its release they strangely took the step of of spending seven months in the rehearsal studio writing "a set of potential hit songs". Astute or silly? According to Jesse and Steve this was a management decision.
In the meantime their name was kept in the public eye by the inclusion of two of their songs on the Live At The Vortex album in late 1977 and a single release from it.
When they finally emerged again in March '78 power pop had reared its head and punk was now new wave and more commercially viable which suited the Wasps Style and sound. The Wasps kicked off with their first John Peel radio session, a major record deal was in the offing and the band was talking in terms of when they 'would make it'.
They now had management, a PR man and "important people interested in them. Jesse went to America to try to secure a US deal for The Wasps. This didn't work out and he returned.
So armed with all this PR and backing what happened? Next up a major deal and single with RCA, home to such punk greats as as Cherry Vanilla. And then bam! it was all gone! Dissatisfied with the direction of the band and management squabbles everyone bar Jesse left in a cloud of writs (Jesse had one management, the rest another) .

PAYMENT
I would appreciate payment within seven days of the auction’s end. If you want to bid on more of my auctions ending a week later please inform me. I will wait and issue a combined invoice at the close of the second week’s auctions.
However, I am no longer willing to carry combined transactions beyond two weeks and in these cases would appreciate payment promptly after the close of the second week’s auctions.
I am sorry to have to introduce these measures – I always try to be patient and allow buyers to bid on extra auctions and / or delay payment. Unfortunately some buyers have been stretching out transactions to unacceptable lengths so I feel I have no option but to limit ‘carried over’ transactions to two weeks.
