THE WEIRDOS - LIVE AT THE WHISKEY 1977 - RARE ALBUM - USA IMPORT
Original USA punk rock release from the vastly underated Weirdos.
The band was formed in late 1974 by singer John Denney and his guitarist brother Dix, initially using the band name The Barbies and the Luxurious Adults.
The Weirdos were originally a 50s-inspired hard rock band that, like the Ramones in New York, predated the UK punk scene.
While initially trying to distance themselves from the name "punk" that was used in New York, the band, in the words of John Denney,
"we just became more and more like this punk rock type thing and we kinda went with it because the fans wanted it so much eventually we just said 'OK, fine! We're punk rock, similar to the Ramones. Whatever you say."
"We already had short hair and we were already playing fast music like that, but the Ramones really made us decide to go for it even more seriously"
Denney claimed that the band's name dated from the early part of the 1970s and that it referred to his countercultural short hair, at a time when long hair on men was the fashion of the day.
Denney Said:
"In 1974 according to some left over 60's hippies, who hated my short cropped hair I was weird"
"Then a few months later after we formed, the rest of the band also got really short cropped hair too. "We were just considered weirdos by everybody and the name stuck".
By the second half of 1977 after constant tours, the Weirdos were able to pack out clubs including the Whisky a Go Go, The Roxy and later The Masque as a headlining band.
Best known for their zany stage costumes and antics, the band helped shape the vigorous and experimental early Los Angeles punk scene and served as an inspiration to a whole host of new and exciting bands.
John Denney recalled:
"We had our own look, our own sound. It was apart from New York or London.... We were staunchly against safety pins, which was the exact opposite of what New York was doing. We were just thumbing our noses at everything"
The Weirdos' first music release was a 7-inch EP, "Destroy All Music," released in 1977 on Bomp! Records, It was followed by the 1978 single "We Got the Neutron Bomb," released on Los Angeles punk label Dangerhouse, The band also released two further 12-inch EPs in 1979 and 1980.
Although the band had an all too brief spell under the punk rock spotlight they made an impression on everyone who was lucky enough to witness them live,......now with this quality release you can too......this is very loud, this is punk rock, this is The Weirdos.....Live.!
I never tire of hearing The Weirdos so put this on full blast and annoy the neighbours, essential, absolutely f**king essential.
Vinyl is as new and so is the sleeve so no problems there, don't miss this pure punk gem and as always no reserve.
