After releasing Tommy in Mid-1969 The Who went on an extended world tour to promote it, and returned to England at the year's end with a desire to release a live album from the tour. However, they balked at the prospect of listening to the hundreds of hours of accumulated recordings to decide which would make the best album, so they ritually burned the tapes (to prevent bootlegging) and scheduled two shows, one at Leeds University and the other at Hull, for the express purpose of recording and releasing a live album. The shows were performed on February 14th at Leeds and the 15th at Hull, 1970, but technical problems with the recordings from the 15th in Hull - the bass guitar had not been recorded - made it necessary for the show from the 14th at Leeds University to be released as the album. The 3 hour show was held in the Unversirty refectory, its was believed that the gig was recorded from a bank of tape recorders parked in a van outside the hall, but had some say the gig was recorded from a single tape machine that was in the room that in 1970 was a restuarant below the refectory. Despite playing thousand of gigs, Roger Daltery remembers the evening in Leeds clearly:-
"The students there were a great audience for us, it was packed to the rafters, and then some more. I heard there were a thouand fans on the roof".
The recording used and then released on the 16th of May 1970 has become and known as one of the best live recording's ever!.
