The Who, A Quick One
1966 UK Reaction Records mono vinyl LP, 593002. Original heavy duty press with matt textured blue and silver paper labels.
Not a perfect copy, but like early UK Motown LPs this plays far better than surfaces would suggest.
Firstly there is a small edge warp. Visually undulation is barely visible but some uneveness can be felt by running a finger over the edge of the disc here. This covers an area of around one inch round the edge and affects around halfway in to the starting songs each side. This area plays through fine both sides but will require a heavy cartridge setting. It will skip with a lighter setting. As the disc is played at this area the needle can be seen to have a slight left / right sway. With all that said, the opening tracks play fine both sides and the warp does not noticeably affect playback.
The disc is glossy but with a number of light hairlines, scuffs and very gentle scratches, nothing deep or feelable. However playback is remarkably clean. Occasionally some very low level crackle and a very infrequent soft isolated tick can be heard but this is really marginal and does not hinder listening enjoyment. Indeed, some of the separator bands are actually quiet. Being picky, perhaps the quieter intro of B4 has a tad more noticeable crackle, but it still at a very low and unobtrusive level.
The labels are clean. Moderate spindle activity but not to the point of label wear.
Original inner sleeve is sound but age toned to corner areas.
External sleeve fairly well preserved. Light rubbing and a slight loss of original crispness but still bright and clean with just a fraction of ringwear rubbing front and rear. Some minor imperfections to laminate. A few tiny pinch line creases leading in from edges. A little air pocketing to laminate at an area to rear panel next to spine. What looks like a crease to bottom rear left corner is a diagonal creasing line in the laminate. If you inspect the card at the interior of the sleeve it is not creased in the same area. Tiny scuff with small piece of surface loss to centre of spine. Top right tip worn with just a dot of surface loss.
