Description

The Who : Live At Leeds A1/B1 Early UK Press 1970 (Red Stamp + All Inserts)

On offer here is a fine example of this classic 'live' album.  The audio is stunning and for once there are no clicks or pops on this album and very little static.  The clarity on both sides is so impressive and whilst every track plays exceptionally well 'Magic Bus' in particular is superb!

This issue with the 'red stamp' on the front cover is supposedly the third pressing and it contains all the inserts including the 'Live at Leeds' poster and the small photo of the band.

The 'bootleg' style cover is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear and all the staples remain firmly in place.

Please wait for the invoice before making payment as it may need to be sent via tracked shipping, conditions below.

Visual grading

The vinyl has a lovely glossy sheen and has been very well looked after down the years.  There are no scratches and only a few faint sleeve removal hairlines on each side.  There is one slightly more obvious hairline scuff on S2 but it has no affect on the stunning audio.  There is some spindle wear but by no means an excessive amount and the run out grooves and labels are very clean.

Play grading

The intro on 'Young Man Blues' is very 'clean' with barely any static and the quieter moments during Daltrey's vocals are also very impressive with only the bare minimum of static.  There are no clicks or pops and from then on plays with great power and definition and the instrumental section is a classic example of that.  The audio is so strong and there is no interference or distortion at all, such deep bass also.  The remainder is without fault and overall Near Mint- is a fair grade.

The classic 'Substitute' has only light static on the intro and thereafter plays loud and true with no intrusion on the audio.  A dynamic version with not one single click or pop and is deserving of a Near Mint grade.

'Summertime Blues' has minimal static on the spoken intro and once the music begins the audio is superb!  It continues in the same precise way and once more there is no obvious interference.  With only a hint of barely audible static this is a very strong version - Near Mint again.

'Shakin' All Over' is stunning from the very start but does have a raspy/static sound for a couple of seconds soon after the vocal begins.  From then on it plays extremely well with no intrusion and only a couple of minor static sounds.  The vast majority of this Johnny Kidd cover plays with great power and for once there is no distortion.  Near Mint- is a true appraisal of the audio in my opinion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The classic 'My Generation' begins very strongly and only has minimal static as the vocal comes in.  It soon disappears and from that point on the audio is loud and true with no real interference.  There is only minimal 'background' during the quiet 'Tommy' interlude and the quieter section that follows has barely any intrusion, the clarity is so good.  The heavier sections throughout are stunning and play with immense depth and power and you can turn it up to full volume without fear of distortion.  The first long quieter passage is so 'clean' and has barely any static which makes a change!  From then on you can't really fault the audio.  There is only minimal non-intrusive light static in the quieter moments and the louder sections play with majestic power and depth.  I would say this extended classic ranges between Ex+ and Near Mint and remember it does say 'Crackling Noises OK Do Not Correct' on the labels although in my opinion there is no crackle just some intermittent light static.  A fantastic version regardless and no clicks or pops!

The intro on 'Magic Bus' is stunning and is without doubt one of the finest I have ever heard, if not the best!  It is 'as new' and as the vocal begins there is no decrease in quality.  It continues to play with exceptional quality and no interference - the 'quieter' moments play with great clarity and the 'high octane' section as you approach the end is just breathtaking and perfectly encapsulates what 'The Who' were all about 'live'.  The remainder also plays with stunning precision.  This album is often regarded as one of the finest 'live' albums released and you can see why when you listen to this track.  This really is a sublime version of this classic and again there is no distortion, the playback is sensational!  The sonic quality is so impressive and there is nothing that intrudes on the quality of the listen.  It is easily Near Mint although the vast majority is better than that!  What a version!!

In summary this very collectable early pressing plays to a 'high end' standard with no obvious interference.  There is only minimal static and it is so rare for this record to have no clicks or pops!  The clarity is so good what is also impressive is that there is no distortion anywhere.

The Cover

The bootleg style 'MacNeill' gatefold is in excellent condition with only minimal wear.  The edges for once are in great shape with barely any rubbing and the same applies to the spine.  The corners have only light wear with perhaps just a bit more on the bottom corners, nothing major though.  The front cover has a little spotting and fading but this is made with thick paper of course so is generally affected in this way and there are no tears and only a little creasing.   The back cover is similar with some light ringwear also.  The inside of the cover is very clean and the 'staples' remain firmly in place.  An excellent example overall.

Inner Sleeve

The poly-lined 'Plastic Bags' inner has no side splits or tears but does have some creasing mainly on the corners.  It also has some age related fading around the edges.

The Labels

The white labels have no marking are in perfect condition apart from a little spindle wear.

The Inserts

They are all in superb condition and have no marking or creasing.  Stunning!
