One of the most creative and explosive bands of the '60s. The Who didn't record an official live album until 1970. For fans of the revved-up, introspective, and humorous fare that made records such as My Generation, Sell Out, and A Quick One instant classics, 1970 was a good three years too late. Rather than referring to sometimes-dodgy bootlegs to discover what "Pictures of Lily," "Disguises," or "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" sounded like live, we are now presented with a surprisingly clear document of the band at--arguably--their peak. A fabulous portrait of the artists as a young band, the disc brims with minor revelations--chief among them that they were pretty sorry as an R&B outfit and that (surprise) with Moon, Entwhistle, and Townshend bashing about, even a mid-tempo number like "Happy Jack" was a total scorcher live.

The band blazes through these songs so fast -- and you thought the Ramones and the Minutemen invented that kind of lightning-speed concision -- that it's easy to miss how perfectly constructed they are. The Who's sound rests on the tension between carefully defined pop-song structures pushed to the breaking point by the band's propulsive, chaotic power. Singer Roger Daltrey and bassist John Enthwhistle are hardly slouches, but guitarist Pete Townshend and drummer Keith Moon are true wonders. They wail with such unrestrained glee that they frequently threaten to blow these songs apart. Then, by some miracle, they land in time, and the song ends. All that in two-and-a-half minutes -- with lovely, Beach Boys-derived vocal harmonies to boot. That's why it's earned the right to be called classic rock -- and why this disc is such an unadulterated pleasure from start to finish.

3 COLORED VINYL BLUE - RED  & WHITE OF THE WHO LIVE AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL 1970

This recording is pretty similar in sound and content to the expanded Live at Leeds album, except there's much more from Tommy, and a few semi-obscure numbers like I Don't Even Know Myself, Water, and Naked Eye. If you do like the Who a lot, Isle of Wight is worth having. The question is not 'which group put out the greatest live album of all time?' but rather ' which is the greatest live album ever, Leeds or Wight?' This may sound blasphemous, but I'm going with Wight (though Leeds is simply astounding), and here is why.
Leeds, from a technical standpoint, is nothing short of flawless. But it is lacking one major element - ENERGY. If you don't believe me, track down a bootleg copy of Tommy at the Leeds - sound aside, The Who sound almost dead. The group had just returned to England for the first time in more than a month, playing Tommy every single night, and they were TIRED. John and Keith are on fire at Leeds, but Roger sounds like he has a cold, and Pete, while making sure to be technically amazing and flawless for all of the 'intelligent' college students, seems to be going through a bout of depression.
At WIGHT, however, this flaw is gone and in a big way. Keith is occasionally sloppy, yes, but the energy level is absolutely incredible. Why? Because the group was playing in front of 500,000 completely stoned dumbasses, and there was nothing like a bunch of idiots to get Pete going. His guitar falls out of tune a few times, and he misses a chord here and there, but his riff-work is better than anything I've ever heard before by _anybody_, and that guitar-tone... That tone just SCREAMS angry and energetic exhiliration. It's INCREDIBLE! Meanwhile, Pete is obviously having fun, with his stage banter reaching Ian Anderson levels of psycho humor, and the feedback that he produces in his windmills and guitar-shaking is incredible.
AND DON'T FORGET ROGER! Roger NEVER sounded better than this on any album, live or studio. Tommy is incredible in no small thanks to Daltrey. And listen to his incredible, loud, growling singing in Water, Shaking All Over, and ESPECIALLY Spoonful. It will blow you away.
I love both of these albums, but if I have to choose between the two, I'll go with Wight any day of the week. If I have headphones, that is - for some reason, there's a lot of air in the mix that completely disappears when the music is coming at you from all sides. Alternatively, it's good driving music - turn the stereo up loud and the bass high, and you will be weak-kneed when it's all over.

The Who were in New York and nearing the end of a gruelling tour on April 4, 1968, the day that Dr Martin Luther King was assassinated. America was already a country divided; Anti-Vietnam demonstrations, civil rights disturbances and militant student activism. With this turmoil as a backdrop on Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6, 1968 The Who performed two incendiary live sets at Bill Graham’s legendary Fillmore East on the lower East Side of Manhattan. The venue had only just re-opened in March by Graham from its previous incarnation as the Village Theatre where the band had played on a couple of occasions the year before. The Who were the first British rock act to headline the Fillmore East and were booked to play four shows over the two nights. However, because of feared social unrest in the wake of Dr King's assassination, it was decided to compact the shows into one per night.

The Who's time in New York City in 1968 can best be described as "lively". Keith Moon's antics with cherry bomb explosives had meant that the band had to move hotels. When installed in the plush Waldorf Astoria he then somehow managed to a blow a door off its hinges and, they had to move once more. On the morning of the Fillmore rehearsal, the band were photographed for Life magazine by Art Kane and legend has it that they were so tired from Moon's antics that they nodded off under the large Union Jack draped over them at the base of the Carl Schurz Monument in Morningside Park. This iconic image was later used as the album cover and poster for The Who's classic film The Kids Are Alright.

Both nights were recorded by Who manager Kit Lambert with the intention of releasing the results as The Who's fourth album after The Who Sell Out and before Tommy. Disaster struck when it was discovered that due to faulty equipment or human error only part of the first night was captured. Thankfully the second night was recorded and has now been fully restored and mixed by long time Who sound engineer Bob Pridden (who was the band's roadie on those nights in 1968) from the original four-track tapes. For the 50th anniversary of these legendary shows, the unreleased recordings are to be issued on triple vinyl LP and double CD.

Due to an acetate reaching the bootleg market in the early '70s, The Who's reputation as rock's most dynamic live act quickly grew. The show is regarded by fans as something of the "holy grail" of Who live shows equalling the legendary Live At Leeds album. The tapes have been meticulously remastered for optimum sound quality and will only serve to enhance The Who's reputation as the best live act of the time.

The 3LP set includes three Eddie Cochran numbers: "My Way", "Summertime Blues" and the never before released Who version of "C'mon Everybody". Also featured is a rare cover version of "Fortune Teller" written by Allen Toussaint, originally recorded by Benny Spellman but made famous by The Merseybeats, the Rolling Stones and several English beat groups. These shows also showcased "Tattoo" and "Relax" from The Who Sell Out as well as stunning extended versions of "A Quick One (While He's Away)" and "My Generation" which becomes a 30-minute-plus jam with a climax of guitar-smashing and drum demolition!

The 3LP heavyweight vinyl version has a gatefold sleeve, three printed inner bags, new liner notes and rare photos.
