The Who : Live At Leeds A1 / B1 1st Press Black Lettering + 12 Inserts Rare 1970

This very collectable first pressing with the black lettering on the front cover is stunning!  Rarely do you find this classic live album playing with such incredible sonic quality and with very little background.  A handful of minor static 'moments' as per the labels (!) and a couple of ticks on S2 that about sums it up.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is sensational and if I had to pick a favourite then it has to be 'Magic Bus', the audio is outstanding.  Not to forget the other tracks they all play with stunning quality also!  The vinyl is visually stunning with only a small number of faint hairlines and you won't find many 'Black Letter' first pressings than this one!

The iconic brown 'bootleg' cover is in excellent condition with only a little shelf wear and the 12 inserts are the best I have ever seen.  Included is the large Marquee poster which was only issued with the genuine first pressings.  The inner sleeve is in excellent order also, a stunning 'package' all round.

It is rumoured that only 300 were 'pressed' with the black print on the front cover but I suspect this isn't true as they do seem to crop up at various times.  This is the third I have sold in the last four months I think.  In saying that I'm sure it wasn't pressed in vast numbers.

Visual description

The vinyl is in superb condition and still has a lovely glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  One thing is obvious, it has always been so well looked after and not overplayed, there is not very much spindle wear.  Under a bright light I can only see a small number of faint hairlines on S1 and S2 is even more stunning with only a handful of ultra faint hairlines.  The run groves are very clean and the Track Record labels have no marking / writing.  A superb example.

Play grading  

The intro on 'Young Man' is near perfect with only a couple of very quiet statics and Daltrey's opening vocal is just as strong with only a half a second of quiet static.  Remember on the labels it does say 'Crackling noises ok do not correct' so I am sure these 'moments' are meant to be there!  The rest of this opening vocal section is stunning and the silent sections all play with sublime clarity.  Townshend's work is so strong and deep and the instrumental passage including Moon's frenetic drumming and Entwistle's deep bass add so much to their classic sound.  This entire sequence is phenomenal and there is no distortion on the top end.  The final vocal has no background and Mint- is very much deserved.

'Substitute' then plays with supreme power and clarity from the word go.  The opening vocal is faultless and it continues in the same precise way with no interference.  The original sonic quality is still very much in evidence and it grades as Mint

There are a couple of static ticks right after in the dead wax but then the 'heavy' intro on 'Summertime Blues' plays to perfection.  The opening vocal is equal to that and from then onwards it plays with that typical Who power and definition and you can turn it up to max without fear of distortion.  The mid instrumental is stunning and the end vocal has no intrusion either.  Mint

'Shakin' All Over' is of the same high end standard with barely any background, just one barely audible static 'moment'.  Once more the audio is so powerful and the instrumental section has power and depth in abundance!  The final vocal has just one minor static but again this classic has to grade as Mint-

The run in on S2 has no background and the intro on the classic 'My Generation...' then plays with great power and clarity.  The opening vocal has just one mega quiet 'crackling / static sound' which is meant to be there I hasten to add!  The first 'bass' instrumental is more or less perfect with just one minor static and it continues to play with superb sonic quality - nowhere is that more obvious than during the next instrumental section, turn it up to max!  The See Me, Feel Me... excerpt is 'as new' and the quiet section that follows plays very clearly with only a handful of minor statics.  The next section is phenomenal, the playback is so strong and deep I cannot fault it.  The following very quiet passage plays with great clarity for the vast majority with only a small number of light ticks and two more obvious ones towards the end.  From then on it plays with stunning quality - the next quiet section is indeed so quiet and as the volume increases the audio is flawless - the same can be said for the rest of this classic live number.  The end section is out of this world, it could not play any better, and you can see why this album is so highly regarded.  This 14 minute epic plays with such quality, any background is so minimal, and overall Near Mint is the right grade but yes... the vast majority is better than that.

The 'percussive' intro on 'Magic Bus' is perfect and Daltrey's opening vocal is just as impressive.  It then plays with stunning quality with Entwistle's bass very much to the fore.  Every vocal and instrumental section is so strong and clear and the depth here is unbelievable.  The high octane sections play with unrivalled quality and again I cannot believe what I am listening to!  This is STUNNING and the high octane sections show how well this vinyl has been preserved.  Moon's work is of course incredible and Townshend and Entwistle are superb here also.  The final section is 'as new' and this has to be the most 'complete' version I have ever heard.  It is Mint and what a way to end this classic album.

The 'Bootleg' Cover, Inserts & Inner Sleeve

The cover is in excellent condition and is one of the cleanest I have seen.  The front cover just has a little red type 'print' on the left hand side and minor creasing near the top edge on both sides but that's not a major issue.  The spine has only a little discolouration either side and aside from that this is a very impressive cover.  The edges are in great shape and the back cover is extremely clean.  The inside of the 'gatefold' is unmarked and just has some creasing mainly at the top and bottom of the spine.  The staples front and back are still firmly in place and have no rusting.  A fine example.

The 12 inserts including the large Marquee poster are in fantastic condition with no marking and barely any creasing.  Practically brand new!  The Marquee poster was only issued with the first pressings and is 'as new'.

The poly-lined 'Plastic Bags...' inner sleeve has no side splits or tears, just some age related fading / marking here and there and some creasing.  It is date coded 059 which refers to the production date May '69 although the album wasn't released until May '70.

Play tested on my Rega P2 with AT-VM 95EN Cart / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
