Quadrophenia is the sixth studio album by English rock band The Who. Released on 19 October 1973 by Track and Polydor in the United Kingdom, and Track and MCA in the United States, it is a double album, and the group's second rock opera. Its story involves social, musical and psychological happenings from an English teenage perspective, set in London and Brighton in 1965.
The name is a variation on the popular usage of the medical diagnostic term schizophrenia as dissociative identity disorder, to reflect the four distinct personalities of Jimmy, the opera's protagonist – each said to represent the personality of one member of The Who. At the same time, the title is a play on the term quadraphonic sound, then a recent invention. Composer Pete Townshend has said: "The whole conception of Quadrophenia was geared to quadraphonic, but in a creative sort of way. I mean I wanted themes to sort of emerge from corners. So you start to get the sense of the fourness being literally speaker for speaker."
Vinyls: EX to EX+. Great to see such a beautiful copy of this album. Most copies I have ever seen were thrashed beyond comprehension. These two vinyls are easily in EX and better condition. Only a couple of wispy hairlines can be found on record 2 side 2. The replay is likewise magnificent with supreme stereo channel separation. Both vinyls lie perfectly flat. I have played this on my high end system (Linn Sondek/Rotel/B&W) and I'm glad to say that it most certainly did not disappoint. Quite the contrary, it had been some time I last heard the album but it really took me back and the experience was pleasant without any nasty interruptions like crackle or skips.
Gatefold sleeve: VG++ to EX. As already stated, it is hard to find this in perfect condition. The outer sleeve is matt and made of very soft card which feels like photopaper. This is the original very first press sleeve and these were only printed in Holland. The spine is wide and fully legible. Storage wear is light only mainly confined to the bottom edge. The inner 44 page photo booklet is present within the gatefold but only the outer pages remain attched to the sleeve as the sheer weight of the booklet has caused it to get detached. It could be repaired with relative ease but I will leave it like this as it does not really disturb and again it is complete, there are no pages missing. Apart from all that the booklet looks magnificent without any creases or other damage. There are no splits or tears. All in all this is well above average condition.
The inner sleeves are blue printed and polylined.
This is a unique investment opportunity!!! The next prog album to go completely through the roof. Finding this album in any condition at all is nearly impossible so late in the day. Get this while you still can. This value of the album is only going to go one way ... up and up ... until it will be totally unavailable at all for a reasonable price.
