"... this double-LP did collectors a tremendous favor by assembling almost all of the Who's rare studio recordings, from non-LP B-sides and U.K.-only singles and EPs, into one convenient place, in excellent sound, although most or all of it was probably dubbed from vinyl. And it's not extraneous stuff, much of it, like "Daddy Rolling Stone," "Shout and Shimmy," "The Last Time," "Dogs," and "Heaven and Hell," is great. Just about everything has subsequently appeared on official reissues (although the 1966 instrumental B-side "Waltz for a Pig," which is actually Graham Bond and not the Who, has not). Although MCA would not appreciate the observation, the fact remains that this is the best and most well-sequenced Who rarity compilation, with sound that is not significantly different from legitimate releases. And there's the bonus of side four, which has incendiary live performances (in fair-to-good quality) from various mid-'60s TV programs.

A Simple Vinyl Grading System :

Mint : Sealed/Unplayed/Unopened
Mint minus (M-): New/Possibly Unplayed/Very Rare
Near Mint (NM): Like-new; little or no visible wear; normally the highest grade for an opened LP.
Near Mint minus (NM-): almost like-new, perhaps a few very slight signs of play that are strictly cosmetic.
Excellent (EX)/Very Good plus plus (VG++): Way above average, very nice, no major flaws; played but never abused.
Very Good plus (VG+): An above average used album; a few visible surface marks/paper scuffs; slight surface noise.
Very Good (VG): An average used LP, far from perfect; perhaps a few scratches. More noise; plays through, no skips.
Very Good minus (VG-): Shows a lot of wear but is not defective or warped. Possibly worth keeping 'til a better copy appears. Records in less than VG- shape will probably not show up in a bearswax2 listing.

LP Cover grading is a much less exact science. Generally, truly collectible grades range from Mint to Excellent depending on general wear. Main cover flaws such as split seams/spine, ringwear, cut corners, writing, water damage etc. should always be included in a proper auction listing. Be wary of sellers who claim their "used" record is in "Mint" condition. This is a fantasy. Only an unopened and therefore unplayed LP might be in actual "Mint" shape. Proper record grading does not involve wishful thinking. Be fair, be honest. 'Nuff said.
