RIVERSIDE RLP 12-201 THELONIOUS MONK "PLAYS THE MUSIC OF DUKE ELLINGTON"
ORIGINAL FIRST PRESSING: COVER ART and WHITE LABEL
This auction is for an original first pressing Riverside Records release of "plays the music of DUKE ELLINGTON" with Thelonious Monk (joined by Oscar Pettiford on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums) RLP 12-201, mono. This is the rare 1955 release with the original Riverside white label, original jacket cover art featuring photographs of the three musicians (NOT the more common cover with the Henri Rousseau painting), and a deep groove around the label. This LP was Monk's first release on the Riverside label.
The LP is not play graded but visually I would rate it a VG+ based on Goldmine standards: Disc has retained nearly all of its original luster. A light scuff on side "1" is the only visible mar (I can not feel it when lightly touched). Otherwise the LP looks great with very light surface wear. Mild spindle wear. The original jacket front shows minor wear on the dark areas but no writing, stickers, marks, or dings. The upper right seam has an approx. 3" split. The other seams show mild wear but are intact. Mild wear to corners. Back cover looks nice and shows light wear. The only flaws are a very light, small "498" in pencil on upper right corner and "DON" in pen on upper left (see photos). No ring wear. Record ships with non-original vinyl lined inner sleeve. I reserve the right to ship via Priority Mail and require insurance if warranted by the final price, so please take this into account when bidding, but only ACTUAL shipping fees will be charged. No reserve!
