When Van the Man robbed the bank in 1967 with “Brown Eyed Girl” he moved quickly to establish himself as a successful solo artist. Alas, that meant that “Them” was doomed as an active recording unit. Van Morrison left the band and his former buddies for dead.

The remaining group members had two choices: either to disband – or to establish a separate niche for themselves. The group struggled valiantly, against considerable odds,  for more than five years, ultimately giving up in 1972 – but not before releasing no less than four albums, extremely coveted today by both garage- and psychedelic era collectors. Indeed, the four albums the band released between 1967 and 1971 are now probably more sought after than the two albums the group recorded with Van Morrison – which, mind you, are  major collectible rarities in their own right.

What characterizes the group’s final two albums is a practically unrestrained and unconstrained attack by fuzz guitars, distortion and feedback. The sound is somewhat similar to the albums bands such as MC5 and Stooges were releasing around the same time. On this, the group’s next-to-the-last album,  Them gives a run for the money to practically every other known garage band. This is a high-octane, high-testosterone buzz-saw rock that affects the nervous system with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

Take our word: unless you have heard this – and the band’s last album, released a year later, you don’t know what “garage” rock means.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new (a few minor, superficial scuffs noted on one track: 'Nobody Cares')

(a)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(b)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4   (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a tiny "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
