Description
This is an opened, but never played, vinyl LP of the "They Live" film score by John Carpenter & Alan Howarth released by Death Waltz/Mondo. This is a special edition that features some of the coolest artwork for an LP. If you open the gatefold and look at the exterior artwork it is designed to look like a pair of sunglasses. The artwork underneath the sunglasses is removable and interchangeable with an ad for a sleeping medication. The interior gatefold features the name of Roddy Piper's character in the font of all the hidden messages in the film. There is an included book that features extensive liner notes, but two of the pages are suck together by "bubblegum" in an homage to teh best line of dialogue in the film ("I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. I'm all out of bubblegum."). The album itself is the "Formaldehyde Face" Limited Edition that is reverse purple with blue splatter in order to mimic the look of one of the alien's eyes, the label at the center being the pupil. So cool! Completely sold out on the Mondo site.

Like most of Carpenter's films, THEY LIVE has an urban western feel to it, which is further emphasized by the infectious score.
Carpenter and Howarth's main theme conjures up images of a lone cowboy entering town, with the main melody augmented by the sounds of harmonica and saxophone. There's a carefree attitude, which reflects Rowdy Roddy Piper's character, but the score takes on a more sinister tone when he realizes he doesn't know anything about what's really going on. Carpenter's signature synth tones create an uncomfortable atmosphere, but the main bass-line is always fighting against them, never giving up. Electric guitar is used fleetingly, but brilliantly, and the whole score embodies the mentality of rebelling against authority that Carpenter is famous for. THEY LIVE will rock your world without the need for a Brazilian plastic surgeon to put you back together again.
