Label/Format: Vertigo – second press orange-yellow format as seen on the pictures. These have matt, quite smooth surfaces with a deep inner ring ridge.

Label Conditions: Four fantastic very clean, fresh and attractive examples with any spindle traces minuscule. A copy purchased new by one owner who looked after his records with care, and this quality double set plays superbly throughout.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine, even on budget turntables.

Weight of Records: 114 / 110 grams. Quite light, but pressed on high-quality pure vinyl that ensures cleaner and issue-free sound.

Rarity: Standard copies moderate, this sold well. But, and a significant ‘but’ on this one as not all copies are the same.

Very first copies were issued on the Vertigo spaceship format for a relatively short time. These included a 53 second introduction of voices and police sound prior to the opening track ‘Jailbreak’. These were soon withdrawn from sale for legal reasons (that put simply as it was more complex). So the first disc of the set was repressed minus the introduction. Then when the Vertigo label changed style again for a ‘second’ pressing (as per this copy), the withdrawn 53 second introduction was reinstated by mistake and withdrawn from sale almost immediately. However a tiny number were sold prior to its recall before it was corrected and repressed again minus the introduction. So copies on this new Vertigo label format that include the original ‘police’ introduction to ‘Jailbreak’ are actually rarer than the first issues and seldom found or offered. So-much-so, a well-known disc-selling music website selling company describe this pressing as “Extremely rare with spoken intro on Side-A”, a term they seldom use on even the most high ticket albums. This copy includes the withdrawn introduction and is superb condition, appearing hardly played and offering the full original album sounding terrific. For fans of this legendary rock band, an essential album and copy as this surfaces rarely.

Brief Info: A live double set recorded in 1976 and 1977, and one that many regard as one of the very best live rock albums ever made. Included are the band’s superb early classics that were recorded as part of their ‘Johnny the Fox’ and ‘Bad Reputation’ tours. A known fact is the album includes some overdubbing, but how much is disputed, but few even care as the album sounds terrific and captures Thin Lizzy at their blistering best. I fact I can more than vouch for, as I saw them in Ipswich on the ‘Johnny the Fox’ tour and it was brilliant. On my play-grade for this copy, I was almost astonished to hear the rare withdrawn introduction prior to ‘Jailbreak’ that sets-up the famed tracks superbly. When it came to light that permission for the opening sequence was doubtful, Vertigo went into panic mode and withdrew the album from sale until repressed without it. When the same mistake was made again on this repress, it was almost immediately withdrawn. Albums rarely, if ever get withdrawn for the same reason, clearly the original plate was used for this repressing in error and very few at all were sold. So this is a significant rarity with the 53 second spoken introduction mistakingly reintroduced to the vinyl. Without it, the album goes straight into ‘Jailbreak’, with it, you get a far more atmospheric and worthy lead into the song. So this is not a misprint to look at, it’s a major part aural of a genuine first issue that adds to the album in a significant way. In real terms, this is one of the rarer albums I have offered on Ebay and a rare opportunity as these do not surface often at all.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a coated gatefold format with quite shiny smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by the Howard’s Printers. Includes graphic thin card inner sleeves.

Cover Front & Back: Both sides retain impressively fresh and shiny surfaces from the varnished coating that has no pulls or sticker issues. Any marks, creasing or blemishes very few, light and faint – cover-protection for decades has ensured this superb cover has hardly aged at all.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb, and also shiny coated, both faces practically as-made.

Top Edges: Both straight, flush and flat with barely any trace of wear at all.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with any traces of rubbing, very light, patchy and light. For dark storage edges, these have fared very well indeed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both open for individual record storage. They are still sharp with any thickening little and very light, hardly any at all in fact.

Spine and Text: A superb, quite wide spine that is still erect with no crushing. Still solid, straight with barely any trace of compression and folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. All text strong present and strong as-seen.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, the spine pair especially have hardly a traces. All retain better than excellent shape with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A superb example of this classic 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This still fresh and attractive, cover-protected item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR MINT: another crucial part of this double set. Unlined thin card graphic inners with all four faces different and dedicated to the four band members. All four in sublime condition with barely any hint of wear with all folds naturally intact with any edge rubbing bordering on minuscule. These so often split from movement, but these have no trace of thinning or splits, that a major plus on these. Uncreased, clean and fresh, both appear hardly even handled and will prove difficult to find better. Have no fears: the records are supplied and shipped in brand new soft-lined inners.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a really impressive visual pair that are very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. Both appear hardly used with any surface traces minimal, ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches and sound quality is clean and without faults. Visually attractive records that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This much rarer withdrawn and hugely limited repress double set plays up to, and mostly even above the high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and detailed sound. Live albums are rarely quite studio quality, but this encaptures Thin Lizzy at their peak of their powers and popularity and just the way the band wanted, this is still regarded as one of the very best rock live albums ever made. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. The importance of the original spoken and effects introduction that opens the album cannot be overstated. Withdrawn from first and second issues of this, with this copy in particular having few in existence (more details above). An album with some quiet passages, but few available copies will outperform this impressive clean pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain these records has been played only lightly. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality set. They will prove very difficult to find better – certainly on this withdrawn example that will rarely surface – and can be strongly recommended. Do not miss this rare opportunity.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
