Jon Mikl Thor ist fürwahr eine lebende Legende. Der ehemalige “Mr. World” und professionelle Bodybuilder hat in bisher 51 Jahren als aktiver Musiker nach eigener Aussage nicht weniger als 41 Alben aufgenommen und veröffentlicht. Allerdings wissen nur wenige, dass die Geschichte seiner Band Thor zurückreicht bis ins Jahr 1973.
“Das ist korrekt”, bestätigt der Sänger. “Allerdings war ich bereits seit 1970 als Bassist tätig und habe in verschiedenen anderen Bands gesungen. Ich entwickelte bereits das Konzept einer Superhero-Rockband, die Muskelkraft mit Musik verbinden sollte. Ich wollte theatralischer werden und fühlte mich von Künstlern wie Alice Cooper und David Bowie beeinflusst.”
Nach einer ersten EP, programmatisch »Muscle Rock« betitelt und 1977 unter dem Namen Thor & The Imps veröffentlicht, folgte ein Jahr später das offizielle Debütalbum »Keep The Dogs Away«.
“»Keep The Dogs Away« hat damals gehörig Staub aufgewirbelt”, erzählt Jon Mikl Thor heute. “1977 suchte ein derartiges Konzept seinesgleichen. Sowohl die Medien aus dem Punk-Bereich als auch die Metal-Publikationen sprangen voll darauf an. Thor spielten überall in Nordamerika vor ausverkauften Häusern. Es war einfach unglaublich.”
Zwischen 1978 und 1982 waren Thor ständig auf Tour. Nebenbei schrieb der Sänger an neuem Material und siedelte zwischenzeitlich nach New York City über, wo er eine neue, schlagkräftige Besetzung zusammenstellte.
Das Resultat der Bemühungen nannte sich »Unchained« und wurde 1983 vom lokalen Label Mongel Horde Records publiziert. “»Unchained« war härter als »Keep The Dogs Away«”, referiert Jon Mikl Thor. “Ursprünglich hätte Felix Pappalardi von Mountain das Album produzieren sollen. Aber er wurde leider von seiner Frau Gail erschossen, bevor er ins Studio kommen konnte, sodass ich die Platte selbst produzieren musste.”
“Die Reaktionen von Presse und Fans war gleichermaßen überwältigend”, verkündet der Donnergott. “Die Eruptionen spürte man bis nach England, wo »Unchained« von Ultra Noise Records lizensiert wurde. Wir flogen rüber nach London und haben 1984 im ausverkauften Marquee gespielt. Alle waren da und wir mussten an diesem Abend fünf Zugaben geben. Der Kerrang! titelte: ‘He Came, He Thor, He Conquered’!” Großbritannien wurde von Thor in der Tat im Handstreich erobert: Er kam, sah und siegte.

The 1983 EP Unchained is a critical release in the evolution of Canadian heavy metal act Thor, marking their successful shift from glam-influenced hard rock to a more defined heavy/power metal sound. Fronted by the muscle-bound showman Jon Mikl Thor, this EP distilled the band’s core identity, coupling high-energy, riff-chugging anthems like "Lightning Strikes Again" and "Anger" with its signature theatrical, comic book-inspired lyrical themes of Norse mythology, combat, and strength. While shorter than a full album, Unchained delivers a potent blast of fist-pumping metal that is highly catchy and remains mandatory listening for fans of early '80s traditional metal.
Unchained is distinct from their later work like Only the Strong by possessing a somewhat rawer, less polished production, which gives it a more aggressive edge and showcases a strong connection to the burgeoning NWOBHM scene and early US power metal bands. The music perfectly complements the band’s infamous stage show, which featured strongman antics like bending steel bars and bursting hot water bottles with his lungs, solidifying the image of Jon Mikl Thor as the ultimate "Metal Avenger." This release cemented Thor's cult status and proved that their visually spectacular gimmick was backed by a collection of genuinely memorable heavy metal tracks, two of which ("Rock the City" and "When Gods Collide") were strong enough to be re-recorded for their next album.
