THREE MAN ARMY "A Third Of A Lifetime" TEST PRESSING
1971 UK PEGASUS, WHITE LABEL, EJ DAY MATT GATEFOLD
THREE MAN ARMY
A Third Of A Lifetime
UK PEGASUS (PEG 3) WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING OF THREE MAN ARMY'S DEBUT LP (officially released August 1971) "A Third Of A Lifetime" - THIS IS A STRONG PIECE OF PROGRESSIVE HARD ROCK WITH MEMORABLE RIFFS, BOTH SUBTLE AND BLAZINGLY FAST, BUT IT WAS A COMMERCIAL FAILURE (the LP sold poorly) EVEN THOUGH THE BAND HAD (and still has) A DEDICATED CULT FOLLOWING - IT'S SINCE BECOME A BIT OF A SOUGHT AFTER CLASSIC (rare enough as the commercial release, even more so as a test pressing)
THE BAND WAS FORMED BY THE GURVITZ BROTHERS (after the demise of 'GUN') WITH SPOOKY TOOTH'S MIKE KELLIE (spelt KELLY on the sleeve) ON DRUMS, COMPLETING THE POWER TRIO (with the addition of Buddy Miles on drums, bass and organ on a few of the tracks)
PRESSED ON QUALITY MID-WEIGHT VINYL WITH WHITE LABELS
MATRIX NUMBERS: PEG 3 A-1U / PEG 3 B-1U
MOTHERS/STAMPERS: 1/G and 1/G (one of the first pressed - could even be the very first copy ever made!!)
THE LP IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL MATT GATEFOLD SLEEVE "Printed and made by the E. J. Day Group, London and Bedford"
COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL WHITE POLY-LINED INNER SLEEVE WITH 'MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN" AND UK PATENT NUMBERS PRINTED IN PURPLE
Although Adrian Gurvitz is a widely recognised name in the annals of rock, many of his actual recordings outside of the Baker Gurvitz Army have been sadly neglected by non-hardcore fans.
This is something of a travesty when work such as this, the 1971 debut by the power trio, also including his brother Paul on bass (they are credited as “Curtis”, rather than Gurvitz) and Spooky Tooth’s Mike Kellie, is both credible and accessible to modern audiences.
Three Man Army picked up where previous band Gun had left off, featuring a mix of incisive, soulful hard rock (Butter Queen) and more thoughtful, acoustic songs, such as the title track. In particular, some of the funkier tracks, such as Nice One, have a dirty groove that is completely of its time, but fits perfectly with today’s somewhat selective “retro” view of the early 70s.
Heavy rock-wise, Three Man Army have more in common with US (or US-influenced) bands of the period than with the Zeppelin/Sabbath/Purple end of the spectrum, and they never sounded better – or more fresh – than they do here.
Side 1: Butter Queen / Daze / Another Way / A Third Of A Lifetime / Nice One
Side 2: Three Man Army / Agent Man / See What I Took / Midnight / Together
LABELS: The white labels (with hand written details) are clean and unmarked with only a handful of light spindle traces - EXCELLENT+
VINYL Visual: The vinyl surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen with some hairlines/brush marks (especially on Side Two) but nothing serious and none of these have any major audio consequence - visually EXCELLENT+ / VERY GOOD++
VINYL Audio: Excellent audio reproduction throughout - deep, rich, warm and vibrant sound (nice strong cut). On playback at a loud volume there are no prolonged scratches, no sticks or jumps, just a little surface noise/crackle between some (not all) of the tracks and the occasional light click - nothing continuous or intrusive. The whole LP plays extremely well with all frequencies bright and clear and there is no discernible groove-wear or distortion - it sounds great. Critically graded EXCELLENT / VERY GOOD++ for audio this is a very nice copy indeed
SLEEVE: The EJ DAY matt gatefold is clean and unmarked with just a little record impression and light outer surface rubbing - the inside is clean and fresh. There is very little storage wear to speak of on either the edges or spine - where all text is clear and bold. Overall. a very fine example of this easily worn untreated sleeve - a strong EXCELLENT
