When Mute proposed to Yann Tiersen, a storied composer and multi-instrumentalist with a penchant for utilizing odd instruments, that they put out a career retrospective, he agreed with one condition: that he could re-record all of the tracks, many with guest performers, and include a handful of brand new tracks. "Portrait" is therefore a snapshot of his career seen through a new prism. It's a very enjoyable set and the assembled cast list - which includes such luminaries as Gruff Rhys, Stephen O'Malley and regular collaborator Olavur Jakupsson - is mighty impressive.
