TITLE:The Fendermen Mule Skinner Blues LP Soma MG 1240 Mono Rockabilly Garage VG+/VG+

THE CRATE DIGGER'S NOTES:Turn the volume knob all the way to the right. You have found a clean copy of the 1960 cult classic by The Fendermen.

This album is the definition of "Lightning in a Bottle." Hailing from Madison, Wisconsin, and recorded on the legendary Minneapolis label SOMA, this record bridges the gap between 50s Rockabilly and 60s Garage Rock. The title track, "Mule Skinner Blues," is frantic, manic, and features the most famous laugh in rock and roll history ("Cha-cha-cha!"). It is raw, two-guitar energy at its finest.

THE LINER NOTES TRIVIA:

  • The Name: They didn't overthink the band name. Phil Humphrey and Jim Sundquist called themselves "The Fendermen" simply because they both played Fender guitars (a Telecaster and a Stratocaster).

  • The Gear Hack: To get that thick, crashing sound on the record without a bass player, they famously plugged both of their guitars into the same amplifier. It created a raw, distorted wall of sound that garage bands have been trying to replicate for 60 years.

  • The Label: SOMA Records is legendary in the Midwest scene (home to The Trashmen's "Surfin' Bird" later on). Fun fact: SOMA is "AMOS" spelled backward—named after Amos Heilicher, the Minneapolis record mogul who ran the label.

THE GRADING (Strict Goldmine Standards):

  • Vinyl (VG+): A beautiful copy of this rockabilly survivor. The vinyl retains a high gloss. You might see a few very faint paper scuffs from taking it out of the sleeve, but nothing feelable. I play-tested "Mule Skinner Blues"—it screams. It plays loud, clear, and energetic.

  • Jacket (VG+): The cover art is iconic (the boys posing with their Fenders). This jacket is vibrant with sharp corners. Very minimal shelf wear. No seam splits, no writing. It looks fantastic for a record from 1960.
