Description
The songs collected here are quite a stunning group of world-weary ballads, full of boozy jazz hooks. You might recognize one of Wait's songs here from The Eagles, who recorded "Old '55." Waits has never sounded more pure or sober, as this was before he was "introduced to Captain Beefheart" by his partner/wife, which expanded his musical horizons beyond fairly straightforward pop-rock/blues/jazz love songs. Boring by comparison to his later work, this album is a true classic and should not be overlooked. RIYL similar singer-songwriters from the era, such as Elton John, Billy Joel, Randy Newman, etc.
Fun fact about this record. I actually "imported" the album by mailing it home to the US after purchasing it from a tiny record shop in Caen, France. There is nothing special about the Germany/France imported version other than this anecdote, and one minor nuisance. The corners of the outer sleeve are noticeably bent/creased. I did not purchase it this way. When I got home from France, I couldn't wait for the day this record arrived; it was on my bucket list for a long time. I can only imagine that this beautiful record voyaged bravely across the Atlantic with nary a scratch, all the way until it got to my mail carrier, who decided to ROLL IT UP LIKE A TACO and stuff it in my mailbox. As a side note, if anyone ever needs to know how to fix bent vinyl, I've got some surefire tricks to share. You would never know that anything was ever wrong with the record, which has since flatted out nicely and plays with zero warpage/distortion.
