REVIEW: IMPOSSIBLY RARE 12" single from Tom Waits. This white label promotional copy of his song "Hang On St. Christopher" from the 1987 LP Frank's Wild Years has THREE VERSIONS of the song (one instrumental, and two vocal). All stock copies only have TWO VERSIONS. The remixing was done by Tchad Blake and features some new instrumentation. As far as I know, this third version is UNAVAILABLE ANYWHERE ELSE. In over 20 years of collecting vinyl, this is the only promotional copy I have ever seen of this single, and the only time I have heard the extra track on it.
The white label promotional versions are pressed FIRST, prior to commercial release. They are usually made DIRECTLY from the master tapes, resulting in SUPERIOR SOUND QUALITY. Common Stock copies are made from tapes sometimes several generations removed from the original masters. The white label promotional pressing can also be MIXED DIFFERENTLY to be better suited for in-store or on-air play. For these reasons, the white label promotional pressing is far more collectible than its common stock counterpart.
