Description

The TOMMY WHITTLE QUINTET - self titled

1955 UK original jazz rarity- nice outer, vinyl has a few light small scratches on side 1 but still plays well

Year/Label : 1955 UK ESQUIRE Label number : 20-048 Matrix numbers :  ELP 797, ELP 802 Stampers :  A 1 / A 1
Very good (VG) condition vinyl - to be more accurate I would state side 1 as being VG- and side 2 as VG+. Although each side of the vinyl has retained a nice glossy shine there are a few mild hairlines and noticeable surface scuff marks on both sides. There is one 1cm scratch which is just feelable on side 1 and although there is no skipping or sticking these blemishes do result in some mild clicks along with light (on side 2 very light) background crackle for just about the entire record. Note also that there is a little 3cm arc on the vinyl circumference where a little buckling occurs (see photo) - this results in some very minor "smudging" for the first couple of bars on side 1 but has no impact upon the side 2 sound quality at all.  Each label is excellent (EX) - barely any spindle trail marks and verging on pristine, with the early UK press deep groove on both labels. Very good plus (VG+) condition front-side laminated West Brothers flipback outer sleeve. The iconic sleeve remains fully functional and highly presentable with firm unscuffed edges, a firm spine, well defined right angled corners with minimal rubbing, firm opening edges with barely any fraying, great condition flipbacks on the reverse side, and all text and art-work remain impressively intact with great clarity. There is no laminate lifting but there is some laminate surface creasing towards the bottom right corner on the front side and a little rubbing in that same corner, and just a few very light storage/handling marks on the reverse side - very minor. Remember that this is a 70 year old sleeve!  Very good (VG) mono audio quality with no skips, jumps, repeats or sticks but there are a number of mild clicks on side 1 (x12 on A2, x10 on A3, and just a few other intermittent light clicks). I noticed no clicking on side 2 at all. There is continuous light crackle for virtually the entirety of both sides of the record though on side 2 the crackle is less obvious. Despite these blemishes the record is still very listenable with the following jazz legends at the top of their game :  Tommy Whittle (tenor sax), Harry Klein (baritone), Dill Jones (piano), Dave Willis (bass), and Eddie Taylor (drums).  Comes with what I believe to be the original "MADE IN ENGLAND" poly-lined inner sleeve in excellent (VG+) condition with no side splits or edge fraying, a little mild creasing, and barely any age discolouration. Note that I always ship the vinyl in a new plain white inner sleeve in order to protect the original.   Not perfect by any means but still highly presentable, highly listenable, highly collectable, and as rare as hen's teeth!!
POSTAGE COSTS :

For the UK £3.38 using Royal Mail tracked 48 (ebay's "simple delivery");

for continental Europe £10 using Royal Mail 1st class tracked,

and for the rest of the world £16 using Royal Mail 1st class tracked.

I do provide posting and packaging discounts for multiple purchases. I make no profit from postage.

Note that I always insert the vinyl into a new plain white poly-lined inner sleeve in order to protect the original during postage, and separate this from the outer sleeve to prevent seam splits. I use thick cardboard stiffeners and take great care in my packaging to ensure as far as possible that these precious records reach their destination in exactly the same condition as when they leave me.
