A relic of the first psychedelic late 60s period that sounds equal parts Beatles and Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd. Also a good place to turn for those wishing to hear Steve Howe's early work pre-Yes. I really have a weakness for wah wah pedals and sitars, and other typical sounds of the genre. Hard to believe a lot of psych bands in the late 60s only released one or two albums or a handful of singles before burning out on drugs or fading away into freakbeat obscurity. Many like Howe (or also Keith Emerson who went from The Nice to ELP), anticipated the advent of prog and ditched the groovy talk about rainbows and other shit, only to realize loftier ambitions of longer songs and more (some would say bloated) complex virtuosity.
"Revolution" is a classic acid soaked mind bender, sounding like a pastiche of four different songs (and a spoken word narration) stitched together. For some reason, it also reminds me of that Simpsons' episode in which Krusty The Clown is watching a clip of himself in the 60s dancing and freaking out in front of a trippy light show. Elsewhere, the pointless note for note cover of Strawberry Fields leaves me scratching my head. The song was hardly one or two years old at this point. Weird. The album also contains a whimsical side not apparent in the prog flipside of psychedelia - witness the music hall references of "Auntie Mary's Dress Shop" or the childlike playfulness of "Three Jolly Little Dwarfs".
