This is one of the most obscure records that the Portuguese psychedelic group Quarteto 1111 made with other artists. In this case, it’s a female singer, Tonicha, whom two years later would achieve massive popularity via her winning of Portugal Song Contest and consequent entry in Eurovision with “Menina do Alto da Serra”. Quarteto 1111 had already recorded a previous EP with her, in 1968, this one being thus their second experience with other artists after their own big successes in 1967 and 1968 as the virtual founders of a Portuguese psychedelic pop/rock culture.
Please note that you won’t see Quarteto 1111 name anywhere in this record. In fact, the musicians of the group were contractually linked to Valentim de Carvalho (the Portuguese representative of EMI), and therefore they weren’t allowed to use that name within another label. This means that the records they did for RCA Victor / Telectra always appeared with no credit at all or, in some of them, just bearing the names of José Cid (keyboards) and António Moniz Pereira (guitar). Apart from Quarteto 1111 members, they always invited musicians from other psychedelic groups like Chinchilas (with Filipe Mendes), Evolução or Plexus (with Carlos Zíngaro and Celso de Carvalho, later on from Banda do Casaco) to play on the records. In this record’s case, the only credit to José Cid is in fact in the authorship of 3 of the 4 songs, the other being written by Luís Miguel de Oliveira (who also write some songs for Portuguese psych/garage groups Sheiks and Rocks).
What you get here is a wonderful and unique slice of psych pop, tinted with folky tones and lots of dreamy soundscapes. “Caminheiro, Donde Vens” [Traveller, Where Do You Come From?] is a folk psych number, while “Terra Sonhada” [Dream Land] is a bucolic and contemplative tune, complete with José Cid’s flute playing. The record follows with the stunning “Amanhã” [Tomorrow], a semi-apocalyptic tune with Tonicha in an epic tone, and concludes with the organ-led “Canção Para um Regresso” [Song For a Return], with the vocals reminding us of Françoise Hardy fake-naïveté.
This EP, like many of the music recorded in Portugal in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, was the only way that artists had to express their musical visions – LP’s were a much coveted prize, and only Quarteto 1111, Filarmónica Fraude, Petrus Castrus and one or two more big names got to record one. Even while Tonicha started recording in 1965, her first studio solo LP was only released in 1972, at a time when she was not singing psychedelic pop anymore. This fact makes Portuguese EP’s much collectable, as their songs cannot be found anywhere else. Don´t lose your chance of getting this wonderful record!
