Wilcox-Gay 10-Inch 78rpm Record Blanks containing entire
July 16, 1947 legendary Boxing Match of Tony Zale and Rocky Graziano
that was held in Chicago, Illinois at Chicago Stadium where
Graziano defeated Zale in contention for World Middleweight
Championship & even includes post-fight comments with
the winner Rocky Graziano with his famous "Hey Ma, Your
Bad Boy Done It!" remark, plus there's commentary by
the one-and-only Jack Dempsey as well.

comes with free CDR digital recording and while we
make no claims of being professional digital transferrists
we've digitally recorded this to preserve these
important historical recordings

~ contents ~


the Entire 6-Round Fight is contained here, plus extra
introductory and post-fight stuff & for some reason the
fifth record is actually a duplicate copy of the last two
rounds of the fight (but dated differently & a little more
muffled sounding, so maybe this was dubbed from the
other original recording also found here?)

the recordings are spread out over 8-Sides (plus the
two duplicated sides) that are recorded at 78rpm & this
sort of home-recorded records are very hard-to-find & are
often One-Of-A-Kind Items possibly even containing the only
known existing recordings of songs, speeches or broadcasts
of sporting events like this important boxing match

RECORD ONE

both sides contain introduction to the fight & contains
a good amount of buildup to the fight including coverage of
who was there and who officiated including the announcer
noting that this fight was the all-time highest $ grossing fight
fought indoors & they also comment on how crowded and
hot it was there plus there're mentions some of the many celebs
there including Al Jolson & Milton Berle & Barney Gimble (?) plus
Eddie Dowling who was there to plug his new talent contest
show 'The Big Break' & many famous boxers were also there
including Jack Dempsey and Geney Tunney. a highlight is
that there is a pre-fight interview with Jack Dempsey which
is then followed by mentions of famous boxer attendees like
Ray Robinson (Sugar Ray Robinson ?) & Abel Cestac in addition
to the weighing-in of the boxers & then all the dignitaries
and boxers in attendance were announced over the PA system
including Youngstown, Ohio boxer Tony Janiro & Billy Petrolle
middleweight champion Anton Raadik in addition to the great
Welterweight Champion Jackie Fields and Bob Foxworth who's
followed by an interview with the great boxer Gene Tunney

RECORD TWO

a portion of the National Anthem played on an organ
starts the second record, followed by mentions of more
people in attendance like Illinois Governor Dwight H. Green
and that for this fight the Referee was Johnny Behr & then
the recording covers the ref clearly telling the fighters the rules
of the match & Round 1 takes up most of this record but
some of Round 2 is on this record as well.

RECORD THREE

begins with the very end of Round 2 then includes a
spoken commercial for what we believe to be a company
called Adam Hats and then Round 3 begins & continues
on the other side which also has Round 4 on it.

RECORD FOUR

first side begins with Round 5 and ends with a brief
station identification break in which we learn this was either
broadcast at the time on WBZ Boston or WBZA Springfield, Ma.
and the other side begins with Round 6 in which Rocky wins
the fight fairly quickly by TKO Knockout. this is followed by the
usual post-fight commentary & announcements including the
Rocky Graziano "Hey Ma, Your Bad Boy Done It" bit, the official
announcement of Graziano as the winner & then brief
commentary by former-champ Jack Dempsey

RECORD FIVE

as previously stated, the 5th record is actually a duplicate
copy of record four that we believe was dubbed from the other
record? it appears to be identical, but the sound is a little
less audible and muffled. since it came with this grouping
of records, it is part of this auction listing.


~ condition ~


these types of home recorded records are made with a
metal disc covered with a very thin finish that the sound would
be cut into. this finish is very fragile & while the sound is not
the best, you still get the idea & considering this stuff might
otherwise be lost to history, it is what it is. these records are

visually in Very Good to Very Good + Condition except that
there are small warps at the very edge of some of them which
causes extra noise at the start that goes away fairly quickly.

the records come in a cool Wilcox-Gay Recordio binder

so that you can hear what it sounds like and we have also
made a CDR digital copy of the recording which
comes free to the winning bidder

note that 78rpm Records are Extremely Fragile
and require extra packing materials, making for a heavier
package requiring higher than usual shipping charges 


~ Tony Zale & Rocky Graziano ~


the bouts between these two boxers are often called
the Greatest Trilogy In Middleweight History (if not in all of
boxing history) but unfortunately only one of the three
Zale-Graziano bouts was captured on film (the final one) but
the stories of the other fights were chronicled in written
accounts given by the top boxing writers of the day. Many
experts claim that there will never be a more fierce and
damaging three fight series in boxing.

Zale was 33 years old & Graziano only 24 years old
but despite Graziano's youthful advantage he would lose
two out of their three fights. the first fight took place on the
27th September 1946 and is thought to have never been
outdone in terms of sheer, mesmerizing violence.

the first match took place at Yankee Stadium in New York
on September 27, 1946) & after flooring Graziano in the first
round, Zale took a savage beating from Graziano and was
on the verge of losing the fight by TKO but rallied & knocked
out Graziano in the sixth round to retain his title.

the rematch came a year later in Chicago on July 16, 1947
and was a mirror image of their 1st fight with Graziano getting
battered around the ring, suffered a closed eye and appeared
ready to lose by a knockout, then rallied and knocking Zale out
in the sixth round, becoming world middleweight champion.

their last fight was held in Newark, New Jersey at what was
then known as Bear Stadium a.k.a. Ruppert Stadium (home of
the Newark Bears Baseball team & also the Newark Eagles Negro
League team) the following year on June 10, 1948) with Zale
regained his crown, winning the match by a knockout in the 3rd
round. The knockout blows consisted of a perfect combination
of a right to Graziano's body and a left hook to Graziano's jaw
knocking him unconscious. while this fight was Zale's last
hurrah, Graziano commented later on that he would wake up
in a cold sweat from the recurring nightmare of being back
in the ring with Zale, who he said really was a man of steel.


~ Tony Zale ~


Tony Zale was from the steel town Gary, Indiana which
gave him his nickname "Man of Steel" and he also had the
reputation of being able to take fearsome punishment but still
rally to win, reinforcing that nickname. Zale was known as a
strong body puncher who punished his opponents steadily
wearing them down before knocking them out. Zale had won
the world title six years prior to fighting Graziano with a
thirteenth round TKO over Al Hostak & went on to beat Hostak
a total of three times, but he is most famous for his three
fights with Graziano. Later in his life Zale was originally cast
to play himself in the movie Somebody Up There Likes Me but
when Paul Newman (playing Graziano) & he were sparring prior
to filming, Newman got rough and Zale actually knocked him
out. Zale was replaced quickly for the final fight scene.


~ Rocky Graziano ~


Rocky Graziano was a tough Italian American from
New York City who started out early on as a street fighter
and even served time in prison until discovering the legalized
mayhem of professional boxing as his savior. Twice he beat
Freddie “Red” Cochrane which was followed by a win over
Marty Servo earned Graziano a crack at the heavyweight title
against Tony Zale which was the first of the legendary trilogy
between the two boxers & even though Zale ultimately took the
title from him, Rocky Graziano is considered to've been one
of the greatest knockout artists in boxing history, often
even taking his opponent out with a single punch.
