TOWNES VAN ZANDT
"FOR THE SAKE OF THE SONG"
POPPY PYS-40,001
VERY RARE ORIGINAL PRESSING OF TOWNES' DEBUT ALBUM FROM 1968!
GIVEN TOWNES RELATIVE OBSCURITY, EVEN AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH ALMOST 30 YEARS LATER, THIS DEBUT IS EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND. OCCASIONALLY, REISSUE COPIES - ALSO OUT OF PRINT - WILL SHOW UP ON THE TOMATO RECORDS LABEL BUT FINDING AN ORIGINAL POPPY RECORDS PRESSING IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE!!
COVER IS IN VG+ CONDITION WITH MODERATE DAMAGE TO THE SEAMS AND LIGHT RINGWEAR. THERE IS A SMALL DRILL-HOLE (PROMO?) IN THE LOWER LEFT CORNER.
VINYL IS MINT MINUS WITH VIRTUALLY NO WEAR - UNHEARD OF FOR THIS 40+ YEAR OLD LP!!
Townes Van Zandt wrote songs with an uncommon grace and poetic clarity, and he sang them with a voice that was at once straightforward, eloquent, and mindful of the arid beauty of his images. A decade after Van Zandt released his first album, there would be dozens of singer/songwriters following his example, but he was a rather unusual commodity when For the Sake of the Song was released in 1968, and the album's production and arrangements occasionally suggest that Jack Clement and Jim Malloy didn't always know what to make of what he brought them. The 11 songs on Van Zandt's debut are all fine stuff (even the throwaway novelty "Talkin' Karate Blues" at least brings a chuckle), and the emotional force with which Van Zandt delivers "(Quicksilver Daydreams Of) Maria," "Tecumseh Valley," and the title tune belies the fact this was his first album. But on several tracks Clement and Malloy attempt to match the elusive mystery of Van Zandt's music with overblown accompaniment and deeply echoey recording, especially the cheesy chorus on "The Velvet Voices," the clichéd Western accompaniment of "I'll Be Here in the Morning," the tinkling keyboards on "Sad Cinderella," and the rattling percussion of "Waitin' Around to Die." In spite of the occasionally misguided production, For the Sake of the Song remains a classic debut. These songs make clear that Van Zandt's genius was already fully formed, and as both a composer and a performer he was a man of rare gifts; even when the backing threatens to drown him out, his gifts come shining through, and For the Sake of the Songwas an auspicious debut offering from a talent of the first order. -- All Music Guide

RECORD GRADING POLICY
MINT = like new or near new with only one or two small insignificant defects, a 9 or better on a 1-10 scale
EXCELLENT = Would be Near Mint, except for a couple of light hairlines or scuffs, which do not affect play
VG++ = still a very nice record with all or nearly all of its original gloss but may have a few more light, surface marks, hairlines, needle tracks or the like which should not materially affect play
VG+ = a nice, but used record that may have a series of light scuffs or scratches. It probably plays with a few pops, but has no serious problems.
VG = a well-used record that still should sound OK when played, but may have moderate surface noise, pops, etc.
VG- = a very well-worn record that plays through without skipping, but will do until a better copy comes along.
Good = not actually good at all but probably will play through but with much in the way of surface noise, pops, crackles, etc. Still, will have no cracks, chips or the like
Fair = you are getting this record just to own but not to play
Poor = the sky's the limit, generally I will discard a record this bad (and sell the cover, jacket or sleeve alone) unless the label holds some particular interest

Part of our postage fee covers the cost of the mailer and pads (which currently costs us up to a dollar per).
