Label/Format: Island – pink format with matt, smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the few spindle marks light, fine and faint as seen under angled light. Although a few gentle surface marks on the record, this one plays superby with very detailed and punchy sound. Beautifully pressed by Pye and I have never found this an easy one on the pink label that plays as well as this splendid copy.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: Do not just consider this ‘just another compilation album’: this is a very special title within the Island catalogue, not least for being only briefly available on the full Pink format. This is a brilliant record, it covers only the early three albums and 1960s singles period. It includes the brilliant tracks ‘Paper Sun’ and ‘Hole in My Shoe’ that did not appear on the UK versions of their debut album. ‘Medicated Goo’ and Shanghai Noodle Factory’ only appeared on the band’s third album Last Exit, a very hurried contractual album that sold very poorly and is very hard to locate on the pink format. An indispensable set of the early Traffic classics that included the mighty talents of Dave Mason. Not only is this a hard one to find on the pink label, its even harder in decent conditions. The cover was never laminated and is usually badly rubbed, grubby, ringworn and just plain tatty – this one is in super condition and it’s the original E. J. Day Printed example as it should be. Just one small corner dink stops my highest grading. The record plays beautifully, any of the gentle surface marks or hairlines being ignored. The sound is fantastic on these deeper early grooves – those two classic psych singles will seldom be heard better. ‘Just another best of album’ – hardly!

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and even with a small corner crease, this is exceptional for one that wears so badly unless stored and handled very carefully. An unlaminated single format with matt, smooth surfaces that was printed and made in England by E. J. Day. Includes the original plain white inner.

Cover Front: This revealing pale coloured front retains fantastic freshness and is almost as clean as when made. Yes, a small bottom left corner crease with little else, any surface trace blemishes seen under light are ultra fine and faint.

Cover Back: In terms of rubbing or wear, this has barely any, and just look how prone to wear this one will be. The small corner crease on the same corner is even smaller and again, any blemishes to this hugely unforgiving surface are tiny, very few and faint. Ringwear? – what ringwear? – this is rarely seen anything like this. Also, and not least, the lack of fingermarks to the intense matt black surface is the difference between average and exceptional – this has barely even a trace. So-much-so, I actually held this within a soft cloth to avoid any risk of putting any on myself. A magnificent back that will prove beyond difficult to find like this again.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both are practically unworn, straight and little short of as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any wear or thickening, also guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine too: solid, straight with barely any hint of compression, all text is perfect and unworn and looking very attractive in pale blue on the deep black – the title centred a little high in manufacture. This again is almost as made and totally unaged, the odd natural surface crinkle beyond ultra critical.

Corners: Three are all nigh-on perfect as made. The bottom left has a fairly light dink and mild tip crease – as stated, this apart, I would have seriously considered a Mint(–) grade.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this clearly wear-prone and delicate late 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. Even with the minor ‘flaw’, this should still please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(–): a barely aged plain solid white unlined inner that is clean, fresh and barely creased. All edges solidly intact with no splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence, a few fine and light surface marks, none penetrating or sounding. For those who purchased this album, it was usually an immensely popular one (and why not?), and most were heavily played and often with dire results. Heavy marks, poor sound and damaged from early record players, we have all seen them. I simply will not offer such copies. Visually a super record that should please many collectors, and especially those wanting a superbly clean sounding early pressing.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This more elusive pink label Island record plays even above its high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Superbly produced and with amazing stereo imagery and warm deep sound, this a stunning album to listen too. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this early pink pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only modestly and has been generally well stored. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. A copy that could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. One of my favourite compilations from this golden period with every song a gem.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
