Brief Artist & Album Info: This fourth Traffic album has a more traditional feel, especially the classic title track - but the material is quite mixed. Six songs feature and all are superb, Traffic were now a three piece and rarely sounded much better. One of Traffic’s most popular and best loved albums and this is an impressive heavy-pressed example with a lovely cover as well.

Musicians: Steve Winwood – organ, piano, percussion; Chris Wood – Sax, flute, electric sax, percussion; Jim Capaldi – drums, percussion.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with the rustic look and feel with matt finish. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. Later examples lost this famous imprint and looked much different, they certainly became more wear-tolerant than the earlier-made ones. Includes the Island blue inner sleeve.

Cover Front: One tiny mark near the right edge, probably a minor adhesive trace in manufacture? The spine edge has toned as many, if not most seem to do. That apart, little else to fault on a clean and attractive front, these hard to find as such. This rustic surface is totally intolerant of sticker marks, so glad to say, this has none.

Cover Back: A very gentle and faint hint of rim darkening near the top and bottom edges (but look hard). Light spine fold toning. All pretty much as per the front and still very attractive.

Cover Inner Gatefold: A faint mark trace near the top, again a likely adhesive trace, it hardly shows. But this inside will seldom be seen better.

Top Edges: Some patchy toning, any rubbing light and minor, both straight and meeting flat and parallel.

Bottom Edges: Minimal hints of any toning on these storage edges, gentle rubbing only and again straight and neatly parallel.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This one has a front with a real tucked and folded edge, this barely worn at all. The record enters on the back edge open edge which is very neat and sharp with little to fault. Also guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, both right edges meet up very closely together and parallel. This has toned and a little rubbing to the central text – the top of the ‘YCO’ in ‘BARLEYCORN’ has rubbed. All other fully present.

Corners: The corners have retained very fine or better shape with no dinks. Any rubbing registers little and only light.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this quite unforgiving cover. I actually think a gently aged cover actually makes this look more attractive – that purely my opinion of course. This famous old sleeve should please many collectors but not for the highly discerning or connoisseur collect as the grading will suggest.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): this blue Island inner retains it’s soft lining and has minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Gently darkened on the seam adhesive that few avoid, this has the ‘St Peters’ address details.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with any surface traces being ultra fine and faint as seen under bright angled light. A lovely visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy very lightly played on all the evidence, this is a popular album and first issues are usually played to destruction, so never any qualms in offering any pin rim version. Also unlike some originals, this is very well pressed with no pressing flaws or sound issues. Visually a lovely record that should please most most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This evergreen classic plays up to its very high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A fantastic Island pressing too with barely any traces of surface sound, and this is an exceptional clean pressing, and this does have some quieter passages. Few available copies will match or outperform this quality EMI-pressed example I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. The cover notoriously darkens with age. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
