Label/Format: Island – original first pressed pink format with the orange eyeball logo. Both labels deeply textured with the deep inner ring ridge. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both in stunning condition and this is a 42-year-old album. Beautiful pink shades that have a pastel-like hue and of connoisseur quality. Very clean and attractive with just a faint surface mark on side one but barely any spindle marks to be see. The rustic surfaces are simply gorgeous with almost the freshness of a new record. For record condition, this more obscure Island album will be hard to ever find better.

Cat Number: ILPS 9095.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 167 grams. Like most of these early orignal Island albums pressed on this label and format, this is real heavyweight.

Rarity: Rare: one of the lesser-lauded Island bands that sold in very small numbers. Finding a copy that appears hardly played and offering pristine sound is a huge task. This record will delight fans of the genre and label, the record especially is simply magnificent.

Brief Info: Second album of two issued on Island – both are rare and sold in very small numbers. Without doubt, one of the more obscure and lesser-known acts on this hugely collectable label. Tramline played blues-based rock and I personally feel they are somewhat undervalued musically. Okay, they are far from the greatest act to adorn what for me is the UK’s greatest ever label, but the music is very pleasant and includes a very good version of Traffic’s ‘Pearly Queen’. Way undervalued in the price guides, who seem to not even know this was issued on the pink orange eyeball format. I doubt if more than a handful ever were being honest, this shows up so infrequently and being totally honest, this is my very first one ever. What is certain, I will never find a better copy of the record which is simply stunning. Hardly played, looking fantastic and with pristine sound. Production-wise mediocre, but that is out of my control, I can simply only offer a record that plays as it did when pressed 42-years-ago. The cover has little to fault either bar some lifting on the spine edge – yes this is an unusual Island cover that is FULLY laminated – not quite so many of those around, most being matt-finished. This has an unusual import sticker on the front in gold and black. Apparently, this cover was due to be exported but made it’s way back to the UK. Please see my close-up picture of this rare and unusual sticker that is near pristine. Clearly this is an album for the Island connoisseur, it will not be seen or offered often and a scarce opportunity to own one of Island’s more obscure and lesser-known bands.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderate in theory, but this is clearly one that is prone to laminate lifting and this has it accordingly. The very thin card will not help this trait and I can imagine few examples will ever avoid it.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single fully laminated format and including a rare and unusual ‘Special Import Service’ sticker on the front (as seen in close-up). Printed and made in England by Senol.

Lamination: Front & Back: The main issues on the both sides is some moderate laminate lifting on the spine edges. The front has one moderate blister, the back has a line down most of the length. This is not wear as such, but a trait of these type of covers. A few fine surface creases on the front, just one or two on the back. The laminate retains a fine shine and clarity with some dulling around the very thick record’s shape mostly seen on the back. This being far from excessive but being such a black cover, it emphasises it more. The Philips ‘Special Import Service’ (Quantité limitée) sticker is in superb condition and only shows very light rub traces to the fragile gold surface colour. A sticker that has not been picked at or ever removed, totally crisp and sharp all over. This record was destined to be exported, but found it’s way back here, this sticker itself would be rare and seldom seen. Overall, this is a very fine cover, the spine edge lifting is hardly unusual but does detract for the highly discerning collector. That said, how many of these will you ever find with none?

Top Edge: Practically as made.

Bottom Edge: As above bar a surface scuff near the right corner area (approx an inch), this has removed the laminate only on the edge iteself, not on the main cover front or back.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A very impressive spine: solid, but quite thin, straight with some mildish compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate that has just one tiny hairline crease.

Corners: A small rub bottom right, the others almost as made and all retain excellent to near mint shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this rare and elusive Island cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better and that is taking into account of the lifting on the spine edges. This still little-worn and attractive item should please many, if not most collectors. The only issue is the blistering on the spine which being honest again, I consider a normal part of this cover.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white, polylined inner that has ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. Some relatively mild corner creasing but still clean with minimal ageing. The edges secure and the window circles near pristine and very crisp and sharp. The lining ultra clean and clear with hardly any wrinkling. A tiny nick tear on the top opening edge being somewhat critical and the odd tiny mark or two.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) / MINT(-): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very heavily pressed. A copy hardly played on all the evidence with any surface blemishes simply that, blemishes. The tiny few seen under light being ultra fine and faint and with no effect on the super-clean sound of course. Visually a wonderful example of this rare Island record that should please most-all collectors and even the highly discerning.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare record plays even above it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing that offers nigh-on flawless sound. This too on a very revealing system, no damaging heavyweight stylus have been near this one from the distant past. Few copies will match or outperform this ultimate first pressing, this one could hardly be bettered. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
