Description
THE CONGOS: HEART OF THE CONGOS (aka HEART OF THE CONGO MAN) (LP)
1977, Black Art, Jamaica. First Jamaican pressing, Matrix LP-4049.
There are at least 7 or 8 different legitimate pressings of this LP, each pressing unique in its own way. This is the very first pressing, featuring mixes and arrangements not found on any subsequent pressing. It's a bit more stripped down and lo-fi, breaking down to almost a capella at times, really highlighting the vocal harmonies. "Solid Foundation" and "The Wrong Thing", to me stand out as particularly distinct from later pressings.
It also features the unique hand-decorated cover. Allegedly, Lee Perry did not approve of the light blue stripes on the cover (presumably because they do not fit the liberation color scheme), and painted over them himself in yellow. In most subsequent pressings, the vertical stripes were changed to black.
Play grade: ranges from VG to EX, solid VG+ overall
Jacket: VG, wear around edges but only one minor split to bottom seam. No writing. There's a middle finger ink stamp on both sides of the jacket and record label.
