Special Note: On this immensely rare record, I have to break my own protocol of low starting bids. Such items are highly costly to obtain and this is a safety-net for my investment. It has already attracted the attention of a few dealers who have offered me my minimum bid to sell immediately. I prefer to sell my items to collectors by choice and I like the enjoyment of offering items worldwide on Ebay. My minimum selling price may look large, well maybe so, but it’s also realistic as the prices of the rarest Spirals surge upwards and continue to do so as they become ever harder to even find. This copy (in my and other dealers opinion) merits this at the very least and of course this should attract serious collectors. If no-one bids, I have option two, the dealers (who clearly know they can make a good profit themselves). Or option three, keep it and let it’s value increase still further over time. I do not submit high opening bids lightly as I never sell with minimum fixed profits, but in this case, it's purely common-sense to protect my outlay. Label/Format: Vertigo – original Spiral format (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive. Side one has only very light and few, fine spindle traces. Side two has again light spindle marks, with a thick but very faint scuff trace. With normal viewing, this show little and this has not affected the surface ink or text of the label at all. Both look superb: side one’s full Spiral is nigh-on perfect from rim to hole with the central rim pristine and unchipped. Side two is a beautiful snowy white with no fingermarks or handling traces, the lack of grubbiness and pure good looks will take something exceptional to match or better. All evidence, including pristine sound quality, indicates a record only very lightly played. This was a real delight and my first experience of this title ever on record.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity & Overview: Ultra rare: make no mistake, this is one of the very rarest Vertigo’s and they seldom get seen or offered. Most around locked away in valuable and prized collections. In real terms, this is up there with the rarest albums I have yet offered on Ebay especially so on a bigger label. This sold in tiny numbers, many ending up in bargain bins of the day with others on this label. To put a number on those sold would be pure folly, but what is certain, it was a low number, indeed very low in vinyl terms. What makes this buck the trend too is the fact this is a very good album in terms of music quality. Although I have listed under ‘Progressive Rock’, that is purely for it’s label which is better known for this style of music and those who seek Vertigo records. This is a cult acid-folk album and a true delight it is too. What makes this extra-special too is the cover, a typical lavish and complex design of genuine beauty. But with that complexity and beauty comes fragility. A single sheet of card that opens out to a poster size item at 3 feet by 2 feet. Of the tiny amount issued and sold, only a small percentage remain intact. That is say unsplit or without major repairs. Prone to all forms of wear and damage, finding one intact is a significant achievement. Some were wall-mounted and with pin-holes in corners or cellotape marks. I wish to make this very clear, this cover is a superb example, but such is life, not everything is perfect. The owner informed me this indeed has a price reduction sticker on the front when he purchased it. On removal, two small surface pulls occurred on the front just below the Spiral logo near the top right corner. Being a coated cover with the feel of washable wallpaper (which is textured by-the-way), the pulling was not severe, also being black, the area was neatly tipped-in by the same, one-and-only owner. The small areas show little and the eye certainly is not drawn to them. Seen more with viewing under light but normal viewing means only minor visibility. These two small enhanced areas are the only issues on this gorgeous cover, if indeed they are an issue, do not bid, but it will take a remarkable example to better this. The only other clue to it’s great age is the plain back which has consistently darkened with age as most of these spiral poster-style covers do. The ultra fragile spine is pristine with all text as made, another huge plus. The record looks little played, any surface blemishes tiny, few and faint and sound quality pristine from beginning to end. Indeed, the disc itself could prove a significant upgrade itself for some. The Swirly inner is superb too. One of the classic Spiral covers looking lovely, I have taken individual pictures of all the printed elements to show each face as closely as possible including the folds. Nothing to hide, this is lovely. Note the shaped parts of the inside folded faces, all totally undamaged or creased and the folds strong and unweakened. Beautifully designed and made, but alas, incredibly fragile and often the victim of those dreaded shop stickers. I can do nothing about that of course. Can I also make this clear, if any of the black areas looked rubbed or faded, it's NOT the case. It's just my camera-flash highlighting the textured surfaces as can be best seen on the shaped inside faces. All are a rich black with no fading. One of the ‘lost’ folk rarities on a cult and massively collectable label. For those with aspirations of putting a set together, this will always prove one of the most elusive, it’s almost a case of taking it while you can because for sure, they are getting harder and harder and HARDER to find. Especially in near top conditions. Okay this has a small cover issue, but it is just that, small. Finding a pristine perfect all-round one is beyond difficult. This is a fantastic opportunity for the serious collector. I can make no apology for my starting bid, something I rarely, if ever do, but I also have to be realistic. Brief Info: Few folk collectors or Vertigo fans will not know this ‘lost’ diamond, an album that has long been rare, collectable and sort-after. One of the classic treasures of the difficult Swirl albums, but unlike some of the ultra elusive ones on that label, this is a superb album musically. There are excuses for some of the genuine rare ones not to have sold, they are pretty dire or mediocre at best. This is a delightful folk album with quality musicians and vocals, the material enjoyable. It even includes the talents of Pentangle’s bass virtuoso Danny Thompson and drummer Terry Cox. One to play to enjoy, not just once and forget about. Just holding the beautifully designed cover is almost enough, but the fantastic sounding record makes for a really prized piece. Fronted by American singer and flautist Ann Stewart she joined the two male members to make this one-off gem. The trio soon split and little has been heard of them since. I have mentioned the smallish cover blemish above, but I do so again to make sure no-one misses this information. A shop sticker on removal pulled two smallish areas, being a black cover, improving these is always much easier and done well enough not to show that much. Being the only real issue on what is a superbly preserved cover, I still consider this quite exceptional bearing in mind the format and complex nature of it’s design. If these improved marks are an issue, do not bid. The record is exceptionally clean, little played with any surface trace marks few and ultra faint, and even more importantly, nothing sounds. A record that plays nigh-on to perfection and this too with mostly gentle music that tests any record’s pressing quality to the limit. My LP12 hides nothing and this Swirl sounds fantastic. A copy worthy of the highest consideration for sure, if your Vertigo collection is missing what is the arguably the very best of the rarest titles on this label, a rare opportunity. My first one ever and my minimum selling price is more than realistic and most collectors will know that anyway. I would like to add, this album, should it sell, will be posted anywhere in the world I sell to FREE, fully insured with signed for first class postage. This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High++. An major achievement to find one intact with no tape holding it together.

Cover Grade and Format: I grade this cover EX++ (NOT taking into account of the sticker marks as mentioned above). These are not wear, but near impossible to avoid sticker removal issues. No-one would have wanted to keep a sale sticker attached to this lovely cover and the risk involved in removal was (I feel) justified by the owner. Of course, I could have put another sticker over the top and state, it’s near perfect, but sorry, this seller does not work that way. What I see is what you get as it always should and will be with me. The marks are of low concern in my opinion, old items with flaws get restored, the antiques market will testify to that, and these old records are getting exactly that, antiques. This is an immensely fragile poster-style cover with six printed faces, opened out approx 3 x 2 feet. The back is plain. The printed sides are coated like washable wall-paper and with a lovely textured pattern. Beware of forgeries that are smooth, this complex texturing is near impossible to fake. Printed and made in England and including the original ‘Vertigo’ warning text.

Cover Front: I have clearly mentioned the two smallish surface pulls, both are tipped-in by the original owner, quite nicely too. They now have modest visibility, black means this is far easier task of course. I have scrutinised this cover closely, and I can see little other evidence of any other tip-ins, the very tips of the spine possibly or odd tiny chip on edge, if so, tiny in the extreme. The front looks lovely, no other noteworthy marks and no creasing. The surface is like a thin vinyl washable wallpaper, the texturing complex, this is the same on ALL printed faces, so I will not keep repeating myself for the others. Retaining fine freshness with lovely artwork with rich blackness, the two marks apart, this will prove very hard to find much better.

Cover Back: The back is simply stunning, just look at that complex artwork, a thing of genuine beauty. In terms of wear and blemishes, there are none, not even a single crease. Just the faintest traces of age toning. I have never seen one of these before and this based on logic, as the non-printed side has darkened. Very light, natural ageing only, the beauty undiminished. I state here, this poster cover has never been mounted hence no pin-holes, cellotape marks or Blu-Tack residues. This in such fine condition, I am sure it has been cover protected for most of it’s existence.

The Inside Printed Faces: I could almost let my pictures do the talking to save me tapping out lots of words and spaces, but anyway… The four inside faces looks fantastic with barely any traces of wear at all. Any creasing tiny, few and faint and almost unbelievably, all the complex shapes parts are pristine with no damage, tearing, splits or creases. Incredible but true. The folds are all strong with any weakening minuscule. Another hugely important factor is this poster cover is PERFECTLY folded. Every edge is flush and parallel, all Vertigo collectors will have seen Ramases, Beggar’s Opera, Juicy Lucy and Mike Absolom poster covers out-of-square which ruins their appearance when folded-up for normal storage. Look at my pictures, they show the folds as well as the individual pieces of artwork, all look lovely. The back unprinted side has moderately browned with age, the coating on the printed sides has clearly help protect the more important sides from this to a high degree.

Top Edges: Very slight traces of patchy rubbing, a little more near the left corner but still only light.

Bottom Edges: Even better that above with little rubbing at all. These edges are also the folds for the poster and being honest, they are in incredible condition with no weakening or stressing at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All very neat with any softening minimal as is any thickening or burring. Having zero is a near impossible task, please beware too of trimming. I guarantee this has not occurred on this cover on any edge at all. The record enters on the back here.

Spine and Text: Absolutely stunning: almost as made and, stating the obvious, this is an incredible achievement. The only possibly tip-ins are the very end tips, clearly the owner was very fussy, but look point-blank to see, this guess-work too. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, all edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. And all text is pristine perfect and unworn, exactly as made and looking gorgeous.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny, possible minute tip-ins, if so, very well done and almost impossible to detect (guess I am the suspicious type?). All retain fantastic shape, and remember this is single thickness card and vulnerable to fraying, bending, creasing and erosion – all this avoided here.

Cover Summary: One of the most fragile Spiral covers in superb condition. Okay, it has two small sticker marks, but all the other major plusses outweigh this relatively small negative. How many ‘perfect’ ones will ever come up for auction? or even exist? No cover is ‘perfect’ if you look hard enough. Few will ever beat this for neatness, what a change to find a poster-style format so neatly folded, it makes a huge difference and to find one too with a nigh-on perfect spine is almost unbelieveable. Worthy of the highest consideration, not perfect, but it will better most available examples I feel sure. Any doubts, do not bid.

The Inner: EX++, again slightly darkened with age but only minor. That apart, almost like new with a super neat window and solid lining. All edges intact and no creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Grading this ultra rarity less than Mint(-) would not be doing it full justice. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence and only showing a few ultra fine surface traces under light. How many near 40-year-old records ever avoid such minor surface marks?, let’s be honest. A beautiful record and if a better one can be found, I sure would like to see it. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A very special experience to play this significant rarity. This crown jewels of the Spiral world plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. And it has to be for full enjoyment of the mainly delicate music with few hiding places for audio blemishes of which there are none here. Few copies will even match let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Talking of pressings, I doubt if this was pressed more than once anyway. This sold in tiny numbers, many offered in bargain bins or sent back. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, one of rarest on this most prized label and for a change, offering quality music. Simply one that got away, probably hardly promoted with no airplay, it had no chance being honest. A real shame, another ‘lost’ folk gem like Mellow Candle’s ‘Swaddling Songs’ and Vashti Bunyan’s ‘Just Another Diamond Day’. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. For the very last time, if you have issues with the over marks, do not bid and this will posted worldwide FREE, insured and signed for first-class mail.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
